Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

But going with a compact doesn't make sense because I'm not in the mountains very often. And you can use a short cage derailleur as long as you avoid the big to big chainring/cog scenario. Campy says that you should use a medium cage on their derailleurs, but as long as you're careful you won't jack anything up.
that's what I thought...I really wanted to avoid having to buy a new der. just to be able to use a 28t...

as I said in my previous post there's too much chain-cross in the Big-ring/cog anyway...so that's not even really a useable ratio, and there's other gears that would work much better than that scenario....

I have a 13-29 casette coupled with a Centaur medium rear derailleur & 30-42-52 triple crank. Perfect for rides in our Cascade & Olympic mountains. I also have a bike with 53-39 crank & 13-21 rear gearing which I can ride up the steepest local hills but don't care to take into the mountains. Different bikes for different rides.

I'm running a 13-29 on my Veloce equipped Sarthe. I didn't change the FD. Runs like a champ. Although I have been eyeing the IRD 11-28 cassette to get some more top end.

you wouldn't have to change the FD....the RD is what we're talking about

Sandia Mountain on a 39-26? Not too shabby.

Why is it that these threads on gearing always make me feel like a puss? "53 x 12 just not enough high for me, so I switched back to a 53 x11" Give me a break.

Although, you can replace just the derailleur cage with Campy. It's easy.

First, a sustained 25 MPH on level ground is a very good 40 K TT average. Second, you only use your 53/11 going down hill and any good rider can coast faster than you can pedal, so... who cares?

Danke.

In all seriousness, Mouse. I was just giving you crap about the gearing. You know how it is? Nudge Nudge, Wink Wink, Aye.

Also, Galen, I use 53X11 on the flats fairly often.

I use the 13-29 and compact 50-34 on my cross bike whose larger diameter tires than 700-23 change the ratio some. I'm very pleased with it. The specs call for the medium cage and I had no interest in second guessing them.

Perhaps it's bass ackwards but I first looked at Campy because of the 13-29 cassette.

Is that with a 25 MPH tail wind or at 25 rpm or both?

FYI I run a 13-26 with a 36-46 on my cross/commuting bike. The top end is good enough for the ride to work and it gives me an easy gear that I can pull a kiddie trailer with.

Real good tip here in this thread that I could run a 29 with that setup on the short cage derailleur that I have. Thanks!

Oy! Thanks munky. I shan't fret, least not whilst I'm amongst this lot.

Thanks for the tip on the IRD 11-28, aballas. That would solve a lot of problems.

Just remember, if you blow your derailleur up, it's not my fault!

I think anyone in your group ride who judges another rider by their chainrings is probably an elitist schmuck, whos opinions you should not concern yourself with.

I personally ride 53/39 with 11-26 in the rear, and I have yet to find a hill I couldn't get up in 39X26, but as you said... everyone's different.
Define: "Hill" . There will be hills where a compact or a 27 in the back will certainly help. I've seen several people, not a lot, but a handful with triples and they race A in the collegiate levels.

Hill = 1% through about 10% for sections.

11X53 = about 90 RPM, so around 32, 33 Mph. My ride this morning was a quick 30 minutes before work and it broke 34 in the flats several times. Don't project on me...

I can post the data from the Garmin, if you'd like. I didn't come here to start a pissing contest. Some of us can push the big gears. Deal with it.

i've been using the 13-29 with a 53/39. it's been a lifesaver for me, and i wouldn't consider changing it.

i've got the mid-cage derailleur, but everything i've heard and read says you can get by with the short cage and the correct chain length. as has been said, just don't do the extreme cross-chaining.

Rode Alpe d Huez two weeks ago with a 34/50 and 13/29. Campy medium cage derailleur. Tops out at about 26 mph on a flat road.

That's what I am training for. First crit will be beggining of next year. I'll see how I do and see how I like it.

To anyone who cares: I really was not trying to be elitist, I was just commenting (originally) about the loss of top-end, when someone implied that I was being silly, because no one uses their top gear. I do. I am a humble and meek person who always wants to help others ride better and stronger. So, I hope nothing came off as "elitist". I was just saying...

Hey let's get something straight. I'm the elitist around here, ok? Or the elite. Or something.
