Experience with wheels built by Performance
Hi all.
I'm looking at ordering a set of Open Pro/Ultegras for training and to use as a back up set. My question is, what is the quality of wheels built by Performance? After doing a bit of research, most people seem to have no problems, while some say they'll never order a wheel from Performance again...
What's your experience with Performance's machine built and "hand finished" wheels? Great value or garbage? I don't totally understand the disadvantage of machine built wheels. It sounds like the machines have problems with tensioning them right. If I did order a set that turned out to be a lemon, would the wheel need to be entirely rebuilt? Or could I fix problems that arise with my spoke wrench and truing stand?
Most importantly... do you think its worth taking some risk ordering the Performance set... or should I look at Colorado Cyclist's hand built wheels for a bit more money?
Thanks for your help! It is much appreciated!
Have a good one,
Nick

I bought the Performance Ultegra/OPs and find them to be perfect for what I need. I did have to go over them on a truing stand and tighten some of the spokes and re-true them a little bit. They were perfectly true when I got them, but not all the nipples were tensioned right, they were just tightened enough to make the wheel true, regardless of the correct tension.

I bought a set of "hand-built" MTB wheels from eBay. They were beautifully true, but the tension was only about a half of what it should have been. I'm sure that if I'd used them without retensioning they would have been OK, but after a few miles the spokes would have started breaking.

I've bought wheels from Colorado Cyclist with no problems, not Performance though.
No matter where you get your wheels (purchased or home built), take a spoke wrench with you the first few rides just in case they need some tweaking while on the road.

from Performace.com:
All of our wheels are hand-finished by our professional wheel builders.
Which probably means the guy that puts them in the box.......

I bought some wheels from the LBS, put them on the truing stand at home and was surprised to see they were out of dish by about 1-2mm. Some advice: whatever wheelset you buy, online or LBS, make sure you check and retrue (if necessary) on a home truing stand. This happens more often than you think. And if you don't have a truing stand at home, what are you waiting for?
