Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

well if you want to talk manual transmission then shift quality/smoothness has very little to do with quality, but has everything to do with the driver. obviously there is no torque converter on a manual tranny.

if you still insist on making the analogy work:
if you are racing in a manual transmission car, you will be shifting hard and it will be jerky. this is because you dont let the clutch slip like you would if you were just driving to the market. letting the clutch slip is what makes it smooth, not the quality of the transmission.

so unless your bike has a clutch the comparison is meaningless.

ok,so it wasn't a great analogy.But you get what I mean.

Yeah, 105s to bring the price point of the package down.
Or has Bianchi equiped their bikes with 105 because they believe it offers better value/performance than the Veloce they've scrapped?

IMO, 105 has better name recognition and is cheaper. 105 isn't a better performing system though. Most major companies are very price oriented. So, going to 105 would make sense in a business model. Personally, I'll stick with Campy.

Very true. The Campag brand recognition is only good to people who are really into cycling. Even on an enthusist forum like this, you'll still find plenty who come in and know nothing of Campag's features.

So yes, out there in the market place, having a 105 would reassure more potential buyers than a set of Veloce from Campag, let alone the higher price tag of a Campag equipped model. Most buyers just don't get it. Sad, very sad!

Pros use whatever they are given when it comes to drivetrain.

True if you are buying groups through discount mail-order store. And most bike buyers aren't so sophisticated.

In real life through LBS and for most volume bike buyers, model for model, I have not seen one complete bike with Campag that is cheaper than one that is Shimano equipped.

I strongly suspect Shimano give major manufacturers some big discounts for using their products.

I knew I shouldn't have read this thread. I was all set for Ultegra for the Pedal Force, then along came SRAM Force and now Campy. The real problem is my OCP nature won't let me buy below the #2 gruppo which means Chorus instead of Centaur. At those prices I have to consider Dura-Ace as well. I'm worse off than when I started. I like the hidden cable routing more and more.
I already have a Shimano bike and I really don't want one of each because I want to be able to switch wheels between both.

Surely those exposed cables are costing them 0.75 watts.

Dial_tone, the new 07 Centaur is a great looking group. You lose the multi downshift of Chorus/Record, but has all the same carbon bits of Chorus. I'm going to be buying the Centaur group for my Flyte build as soon as I'm able to gather up the $$$. 95% of the OCP of Chorus as a very reasonable price.

Anyone price a 105 group at the LBS lately? Or a full Carbon with 105? My local shop was selling a Veloce equipped carbon Bianchi for $2000.

you're right, with their inferior track record, no sprinter in their right mind would ever use shimano if they had a choice.
Great post!!!

I thought the same way. I recently replaced a nice Campy Chorus 8 speed group with a real nice 2003 Daytona 10 speed, same thing as Centaur. WOW, is all I can say. It is easily the equal of the old Chorus. Other than bling, Centaur is Chorus in disguise. If you go 2007 with all the carbon and the new crank & brakes, I can't see the difference. Carbon brake levers are the only giveaway.

I saved enough money to upgrade to a set of Zonda wheels. They made a bigger difference than upgrading to Chorus.
