Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Crank Length

My current main bike has cranks designated as 172.5. A TT bike I am lokking at has cranks designated as 170. What difference if any will this make besides that they are obviously shorter?

There was just a big thread about this a day or two ago. It's 172.5 and 170. It's the length in millimeters from bottom bracket center to pedal spindle center. Smaller cranks "spin faster" because they form a circle with a shorter circumference (that is, each revolution travels a longer distance), but you're looking at a small small difference. There is also a biomechanical difference; people with longer legs (femur?) generally use longer crankarms. You should be fine, and if it is a problem, you can just replace the crank and sell the old one.

170 should be fine for you. I'm 5'10'' and have three 172.5's ,one 175, and one 170. I honestly cannot tell the difference between them.

yeah, try them, you might like them.
With the same reach to the bottom of the stroke, you'll be 5mm higher over the pedal through
the top of the stroke -- some people like this

Search under my name for a big thread I started yesterday with lots of links to help you calculate crankarm length. I have a 33.1" inseam and was between 172.5 and 175 and went shorter. As a rough guess, I would think 170 would work for you.
