Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The best part about this thread is all the Canucks it's drawing out of the northern woodwork with their 'you think it's friggin cold and snowy where YOU live pal?' photos. Now my town with its wimpy 0-30ºF overnight low temps seems like Florida in comparison (like maybe 6x per winter we go down to -10 to -1F at night). Northern FL perhaps, but balmier than some locales.

We actually have a town 5 miles from where I live called Florida NY. But it's not warm there. I hit a patch of black ice there last January and I'm still feeling the effects of that crash nearly a year later : ).

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

That's not the intent, rather just to share the experience

But it does get cold. I think Global warming is real for last year I don't think we got below -36C, and that was only for one day. We typically get weeks on end of -40C during January, February in Saskatchewan.

The funniest thing is when you jump in your car and the seats don't give for the foam is frozen, and when you drive away, the tires have frozen flat spots for a few miles

-32.8ºF

A Meter equals 100 CM, or 1000 mm or 39.36 inches or 3.28 feet

I ride in the cold as long as the road is dry. Getting a mountain bike with studded knobby tires sounds intriguing though.

I will ride all winter, but rain......no. Rain is the easiest/quickest way to get hypothermia. Any mountaineer (that know anything) will tell you that 36 degrees and raining is FAR more dangerous that say, 15 degrees and snowing.

At any rate....I'm sorta up in the air about a cyclocross bike for snowy roads/winter. Can't make my mind up though.....

It can be a lot of fun Mariner

I'm running Continental 240 Spike Claws. They stick like Velcro to ice and hardpack

I like to think of it more as a "smart wimp"....

Although if you read my climbing report of Mt. Washington during a blizzard, you'd probably not agree

blizzard schmizzard.

you're not hard until you've rbeen on a ride where first your caught in a downpour, then it turns into a snowstorm, meanwhile the wind is almost blowing you off the road, and your fingers are so numb that you have to use your teeth to pull off your gloves, and manage to break a Ti dental implant while you're doing it.

I will ride all winter here. I know it is not bad here compared to lots of places but we do get our fair share of 30degree days. We do not get icy roads or snow here though so I guess I will just shut up now and go for a ride.

I'd rather just stay indoors. I did the winter thing a couple of years ago when my bike was new, but the miles I end up with just doesn't add up to all that much anyway. I'm not going out on 70 mile rides in the cold, much less rain and snow.

My biggest fear is getting a flat, getting cold while changing it and not being able to warm up again. At least I have the NYC subway to rescue me.

if they still have pack rides in CP, then NYC is probably the easiest place (that has proper winters) to ride through the winter.

I'm in Brooklyn, so getting to CP anytime other than weekend is a problem. I go in Prospect Park, which has fewer riders, but there are some groups.

Try climbing a mountain with no sleep, no food/water, and spend 16 1/2 hours on the mountain, 7 hours of it in blizzard conditions

And oh yeah....barely any training for it.

Then get back to me on what "hard" is

When your cheeks/face start accumulating ice, you know it's pretty brutal out.

The real question is how long do your camera batteries last at -40?

I like those pedals, I think I'll have to try something similar. Right now I've got the Lake shoes with Time Atac pedals, but once it actually starts getting cold (only -4C in Toronto right now) they just don't cut it. Proper winter boots and platforms are where it's at!

How do the studs handle on dry pavement? Near slicks work great for Toronto, although I've always wondered about the studs.

I see you're a MEC fan- try this with your glasses/goggles. I've found it works really well, and it doesn't get as crusty as a balaclava:
