Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well, Levi must be on the moon.

Johan Bruyneel, after Basso trained with Discovery for the first time noted that, "the arrival of Basso has created a rise in the team's motivation. It had felt the lack of a leader for the Tour."

Yes, especially since Levi had joined the team. Ouch.

LL was never going to be anything more than Disco's hope for a top 10, at best top 5, GC man.

I bet he wouldn't be saying that if Levi had a full head of hair.

Baldism makes me sick.

I saw pictures of the Disco training camp at the paceline website and LL is still riding his Specialized with full Gerolsteiner gear, any special reason for this???

Everyone keeps saying it didn't matter that Basso joined the team in Levi's case, because he wasn't a contender for winner in the Tour anyway. But Levi really has to be upset. It really didn't matter if he could win the tour, but that he would be the lead rider for the entire team to just TRY and win the tour. We all know he's good for a top 10, and surely Levi was hoping all the teams resources would be focused on him and that maybe with that a top 5 finish was the achievable. His dissappointment comes probably for 2 reasons - 1) it would feel so good to have the entire Discovery Channel team working for you (who wouldn't want that); and 2) being the leader of Discovery Channel would mean more US exposure, more publicity and fame, and likely more money in terms of individual sponsorships. I'm sure his original training thought was around the tour for 2007 - meaning not blowing out all his energy in the Dauphine right before hand.

For me, I don't really care if Discovery Channel wins, and wins with Basso. Its just another Pro-tour team afterall. But I really wanted to see Levi as the front man regardless if he could win or not. Now, I guess Levi will attempt something similar to this year to win the smaller stage races and probably defend his Daupine title.

"I haven't really had a chance to discuss how things will be just yet," he continued. "Obviously, we did this [made the agreement] during the Tour, so I haven't had a chance to talk about too many things with Johan. But we'll sit down soon and go through everything."In recent days there has been speculation that Jan Ullrich might be signing for Discovery, something which would obviously change the dynamic within the team and affect Leipheimer's own Tour de France ambitions. He says that he doesn't feel threatened by the talk, "I think it is just a rumour," he said. "I think it is going to be a few months before we are going to know if he is even going to be able to ride. I don't see it [the signing] happening."

Except last years TDF. Teamates and resources won't help an opening prologue were he dropped 6/7 ??minutes to Floyd. Sealed the deal for him. He'll do well at Dauphine for Disco.

I think Levi should go balls out for the Vuelta, not that Disco will have any soldiers left after Basso's Giro/Tour double.

Disco. is turning into the Yankees.... and that just makes for boring racing

I don't think Levi could win a tour, but I would rather watch Levi lose time in the mountains then Basso tromp the field being doped to the gills.

Yeah, but if Basso wins both why not go for all 3?

A lot of you agree that Levi was never going to win, but I don't think that Levi himself believed that, so maybe he was a little upset. I've always thought he's had a little bit too high of an opinion of himself. Not as bad as Bobby Julich, but still.
