Reason why you don't race?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Reason why you don't race?

Doing some research for a project for a city-based cycling program, and the question is simply this:

If you don't race, what are your reasons for not racing?

No special reason. Just don't care to.

Some people love cars, but don't necessarily have to race them. Why do many bikers get asked this all the time (by other bikers, mostly, really)? Why can't one just .. you know, ride?

Competition brings out the worst in me. Cycling brings out the best in me.

Cyclists need something to talk about. They're just making conversation. No need to be sensitive about it.

Cuz I'm old and slow and lazy and already 'proved' myself to myself in another sport many moons ago. Cycling is fun, competitive cycling, not so much.

I'm relativly new to cycling, so racing is more or less out of the question only bcecause I don't know anything about it. Also whatever races that exist around here are not well advertised outside the cycling/bike messenger community--so, unless you seek them out the thought does not really come up. I got into cycling primarily for fittness/fun and because I am really, really starting to hate driving.

Honestly, I am doing the Chicago triathlon this year and although it is a "race" it is also a participation event and that makes the world of difference. In other words, I can compete against myself/clock and not feel threatened by seriouscompetitors even though I am racing for time.

Most Cat 4/5 local races don't include enough monster climbing, which means I'm toast without some elevation to get in my groove.
Of course, this probably varies by region.

Oh, and the higher you go in category, the more of an A-hole you seem to become.

I can think of about a million things I'd rather be doing on a Saturday morning other than being surrounded by a bunch of sweaty, smelly men.

I was always afraid to race, with a multitude of reasons, fear of crashing, fear of losing, embarassing myself. But I entered a cyclocross race this year, and got hooked.
And this is at 39 years of age, I am looking forward to road racing next year, even though I heard the road scene in the Detroit area is a whole les friendlier than the cross scene around here .
