Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

camera bike mount option

Ok, so I saw Viperz's pics of the northern hinterland - fantastic, by the way - and was all set to spring for the ultrapod II that he's rigged up. Then I saw this:

Gorillapod.

I've seen the youtube video for it, but I'm seeking opinions of somewhat that owns this thing to get a feel for it's effectiveness (both in general and specifically in relation to slapping it on their ride.)

They had one of those for cheap on woot.com a week or so ago ($12-ish + $5 shipping). Unfortunately, it was sold out by the time I checked the page.

Thanks!

It does look effective for a very wide variety of surfaces, however in motion, I would probably wrap it with a Velcro over strap just to be sure it held on tight.

The ultrapod II will do most of what the gorillapod will do, but is better for attaching to things like a bike. The angle iron style leg acts as a V block and is ideal for attaching to odd or round tubes and the included attached velcro is great too. I have something a little like the gorilla pod. For use on the bike the ultrapod is better.

The Gorillapod is pretty expensive for what you get. I think the Ultrapod at half the price is just as useful for a compact camera. The SLR Gorillapods might be useful and there is not much else on the market (small tripods for 2 pound cameras), but the bigger Gorillapods are much more expensive.
