Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Helmet Stink

Does anyone have a good suggestion for getting the stink out of a helmet and/or HRM strap? I went out riding yesterday (70 degrees in Central VA... ridicuolous), and since I haven't ridden outside since October (I know, I know), I hadn't needed my helmet. I realized that it's pretty smelly, and it needs a wash. I've heard about wearing them in the shower... but how do you soap that thing up? And what soap do you use?

Also, my HRM chest strap is also stinky. I've tried hand washing it many times, but after one wearing it's totally stinkified again. Can I throw it in the wash with my bike clothes? I usually wash them in woolite on the "handwash" cycle.

Thanks guys.

helmet - soak it in soapy water (i.e. assos wash). then let it sit in the sun for a bit to dry.

chest strap - same as above, or depending on the strap, throw it into the wash.

Wash the pads in the washing machine, wash the helmet/straps in the dishwasher.

Why not just hand wash the helmet with a wash cloth lathered with shampoo?

I put my M/C helmet in the diswasher. Don't see why it wont work for a bike helmet.

Wash it with dish detergent, then replace the pads every so often as the nose goes.

Fabreze just masks the odors. I wouldnt spray that on my gear. Plus then when you sweat next time that stuff will run into your face.

My helmet has removable pads. I take these out and wash them in the sink. I take the rest of the helmet into the shower to rinse off the straps.

I pull the pads out of the helmet, put the pads into mesh bag with a zipper closure, and then throw that into the wash.

+1 I shower after every ride and so does my helmet.
Fresh as new with no stink and no salt build up that stings on the chin straps.
Helmet has held up no problem.

I would add, if you have No-tears shampoo, that is a great option!

A little residue mixed with a hot days sweat isn't going to make you wish you had rinsed better.

No it won't. Fabreze was designed to evaporate and to take the odor causing agents out of the material.

You watch too many TV commericials. Febreeze is perfume with esterase enzymes, the enzymes attack compounds that bacteria, yeast, molds, produce that lead to odors, but it does not kill the cause of the odors, which could lead to sores and rashes.

I don't quite get how "if it stinks, ...wash it" is lost on so many as a concept.

There must be something missing on the Y chromosome that prevents men from understanding soap and water. These threads are all too commmon.

My Helmete has started developing some serious stink. That seems to get into my hair even.

I've washed it a few times, in the shower, in the sink. I suppose i was concerned that some of the glues used might not like being washed. - but then it gets wet in the rain anyway.

Thanks for the tips:

I think its going to need daily washing.
