How Tight Should the Axle Be in the Trainer?

Got a Blackburn Fluid for my carbon Scott CR1. Never used a trainer before. Can anyone tell me what the guidelines are for tightening the knobs that clamp the skewer? I'd rather not overdo it.

i am a newb around high end bikes. but, i have been told by various different sources that putting a carbon bike on a trainer is too much stress on the frame. i would love to know the truth behind this debate.

I put my carbon bike in a 1UpUSA trainer without any issues. There is probably far less stress in a trainer than riding on the road... no bumps, potholes, etc. The bike is mounted at the axle, not at the frame.

As for how tight to make the clamping mechanism? So long as the bike doesn't wobble around in the clamp it is fine. If you get on/off the bike and feel it is loose, tighten it. If you're pedaling and feel it's loose, tighten it. Otherwise go with what feel right to you.

Tighten it up until the axle snaps...then back it off a half turn. That will be just about right.

Seriously all trainers will feel different. Tighten it until it is snug then go another turn or so. Test ride it and as long as it feels snug then you'll be fine.

Oh, and make sure you don't use your nice shiny OCP-approved skewers. The trainer clamp will ding 'em up quite nicely.

Rule of thumb that my LBS told me is to tighten the knobs so that when the skewer handle is straight (inline with the skewer) you just barely start feeling resistance. That was for a normal wheel skewer, probably the same for a trainer.

When I first started, no one told me so I would tighten the things as much as I could muscle because I thought the wheel would come off. Needless to say I snapped one. Luckily it was before I started riding!
