Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yea.. taking your bike off some sweet jumps might be bad for the 404s.

But I thought the new 07's with the Pave layer were supposed to be strong enough to handle cross??

You would be astounded at the strength of our clinchers; they exceed any of our supposedly strong competitors. There is much misinformation about durability of Zipp wheels in general, though the plurality of it is related to tubies. I'd suggest that you read through any of the posts you have seen related to our supposed durability issues. If you see that they are specific to clinchers I'll be more than happy to eat some crow but I can't say I've seen much of anything related to our clinchers. I know our clinchers are more than capable of handling storm grate incidents <cough>.
I hope that we will be publishing a great amount of information and documentation on this subject soon; I'd hate to say when that will occur as there are several more pressing projects at this time.
The Pave cap is specific to our tubular rims-it is comprised of the outermost plies of that laminate. Personally, I ride variations of 303 and 404 sets (one I call the 403 since I haven't been able to pony up for a rear 404 yet) on some ridiculously bad roads around here. Absolutely no issues, haven't even trued 'em. Take my statements for what you will given my place of employment, I'd just ask that you investigate further some of the things you read and PM me if you have any other questions. I'll be more than happy to answer them though I can't guarantee a speedy response.

Granted some of them are old reviews, so maybe the new ones are better.

No maybe about it. Last year we went through 10 laminate revisions alone, one of the perks of having all manufacturing in house, as opposed to buying hubs and rims off the shelf. The bearings have been switched, the hubs are of an entirely new design, and the springs have been changed since that reviewer had an issue. EDIT: All of these reviews cite issues taken care of at least one hub iteration ago, and in some cases 2 or 3 iterations prior to the current hubs.
Spoke hole issues are very rare, and I'm not sure how one person arrived at a replacement cost of $700 for a wheel. We have a very generous crash replacement policy for all wheels out of our warranty; this covers wheels for up to 5 years.
Admittedly, there were problems in the past. We've learned quite a bit from our past mistakes and continue to add resources and people to help improve our products. We've also added quite a bit more staff to our customer service and warranty areas to address some of the customer service issues.
