Best clinchers for about 2 grand.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best clinchers for about 2 grand.

Alright peoples.. your local proc' is still undecided. So given a budget of around 2 grand, something light and aero, what type of clinchers would you guys get? No tubies!

EDIT: Requirements, greater than 40mm preferred, under 1600 grams, CLINCHER.

No no, this isn't your upper upper middle class "ooo which flavor of the day wheels should I get" thread. This is your middle lower middle class "I really want a nice set of wheels that I'm willing to spend some money on but plan on owning for a long time" thread.

next time i'll put a " " in.

seriously, there's some decent deals at R and A, it's local, and they're authorized.

Not up to date with high end wheel deals, but there's some '05 Zipp 303s for 1000$ for sale.

You're talking carbon at this price right? Carbon clinchers are expensive, heavy and really don't provide much more than bling factor for all of the $. It seems to me that if you're going to go with carbon wheels, get tubulars, otherwise, you're better off with all Alu wheels... two pairs for the price of a set of carbon clinchers.

I know it's been said before, just thought I'd say it again

How light? How deep? Intended purpose? Throwing out such a general question is going to get you a whole lot of different answers. One thing is certain though, if you're going to be spending big money on high-end wheels, do yourself a favour and get tubulars.

Those zipp's sound pretty good. I was trying to work out a good deal on a pair of reynolds dv stratus clinchers but it looks like that might be falling through this week so I need a backup..

Do you know of an aluminium clincher that offers deep (greater than 40mm) section and light weight?

Zipps have a horrible reputation for impact resistance. If you're gonna get them, they better be a damn good deal, leaving you with enough money for replacement rims.

I'd rather not have to carry around an extra tire, k-bar combat knife (to slice the tubular off after I get a flat), and a bottle of glue. Plus if I get 2 flats, I'm f**ked.

So.. for general riding and some racing, around the NYC area (keep that in mind if you think I'll never see a puncture in my life), greater than 40mm deep, lighter than 1600 grams, aluminium (if it even exists).

Yes, the deal on the zipp's is that good.
OTOH, someone at reynolds has told me that their 46mm full carbon clincher can withstand higher tire pressures, is stronger, and stiffer than an aluminium equivalent.

What's your definition of "light?" I doubt anybody makes an aluminum clincher over 30mm because the weight is going to get prohibitive. If you're looking at deep wheels, I'd be more concerned about aerodynamics over a negligible weight increase.

A little over your budget but hey, you're worth it right? Right?

I just said, under 1600 grams prefered, if price is no object, why should I compromise?

no actually I don't... and I researched this pretty good a while back myself. The reynolds listed above look like your best bet to me, right around $1800.

1 Hed Alps Front and 2 Hed Alps rear wheels. Or just get a pair and blow $700 on something else like a pair of Bastognes.
