Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tell us what gears you use on your triple and we can give you equivalent gearing on a compact double. On my R3, since I'm not a very fast climber, I run a 50/34 compact (another R700 fan here) and a 12-27 rear cassette, giving me a low gear within about 5% of the low gear on a typical triple setup.

Thanks for all your help.
I am going with a 50/34 and a 12-27 and think that will be my best bet.

no if i can just figure out the size between a 54 and 56 R3. seems I am right in the middle according to Wrench science

Go with the smaller size because the top tube is quite long. I'm riding a 51cm eventhough my normal bike size would be a 52-53cm frame. If you can, try it out first. No point in getting a super bike that does not fit.

I'd get the best Frame/Fork you can afford. You already have the wheelset (correct?). Honestly, Dura-Ace or Force will not make you go any faster than Ultegra or Rival. However, the right frame will get you to end of your century(s) in better shape and with a faster time.

As for gearing, I switched to a compact last year and find the spread of gears much more usable (less shifting between chainrings).

Best.

Yes, I just got an R3 with the wolf SL fork.
Still deciding on the SRAM compact or Dura Ace with the R700 compact. People would freak but I have not 100 percent rulled out the Dura Ace Triple.

the price is close, well actually I can get Sram Force for $1080.00, Dura Ace $849.00 and I am guessing Dura Ace Minus the crank, replace with the R700 for just over $700.00.
Stem? Carbon or not to match a Ritchey WCS stream bar.

I'm 5'11 3/4 with a 32 inseam, own a cervelo r3 with the shimano r700, it came with the fsa compact which i sheared the bb on within the first 200 miles. If I was voting on appearance I would put the fsa warranty replacement back on but the r700 just flat works. I run a 12/25 on back. I have a size 54 and if I am anything other than very vanilla build I would be described as longer in the torso. I would somewhat agree with garysol1 that the bike is very stiff and is not ideally suited as a comfort bike; I do start to notice some aches around mile 50 (not so much 30). Overall, I really like the bike and figure most others would be a performance let down. If I was to look at something else the Orca is a sweet bike and a custom Seven in ti would be nice also .... not to mention a Pinarello ....

Hi TWD,
looks like we are both in Seattle.
I guess you might be one of the otehr guys I will run across this summer on an R3.
I ended up with the 57, partly because My inseam is 32.75 and partly because I compared geometry with my friends medium Ridley Excalabur which is a good size for me and they are almost identical.
The other reason is $2200.00 for the frame and they gave me a new wolf SL fork instead of standard.

are you going with carbon bars and stem? I would probably opt to save some $'s there with the failure problems you hear of from time:time. Having a deraileur fail is one thing but stem or bars going is another

whatever you decide to do i'd go with a compact.

I have a ton of hills and I wish I had one...

GVHbikes.com has the group for $1k, the cheapest I've seen. Good Luck!! shimano makes a compact too called the r700.
+1 -- I own this very group and LOVE it.

I have the FSA K-Wing carbon bar on my Soloist Carbon, and think it is one of the best upgrades you can make. I have an FSA OS-115 aluminum stem, and that does the trick, but the carbon bars are a dream. You can pick them up on Ebay for well under $200 including shipping if you are interested.

Hope to bump into you guys riding around Seattle sometime. Cervelos sure are becoming popular 'round these parts....
