Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

FWIW-- In the USA the 555 is only available as a full bike... Not sure about the UK.

I am seriously not all that hung up on getting a carbon fibre bike, its just that they happen to be pretty light...

In fact there is a company in Germany called Canyon that makes a decent CF frame (lighter than the 555) that also comes with a few essentials like stem/headset, and seatpost and is still £100 ($180) cheaper than a 555. They also have a decent, lightweight alu frame for about half that price...

Anyway, thanks for getting my mindset all confused, biker7 I want bling damit ..err, no I want to be practical... AARRRGGGHHH!

Canyons are sweet.

I've been riding an alu frame for almost a year and like how comfy she is, but its the weight of the bike thats letting me down (I compared her weight to a Trek Madone 5.2 and my bike seemed about 2x heavier!). Perhaps a lighter alu bike would be the way to go???

I've posted a few times about my soloist team throughout the forums... personally, I wouldn't want any other alu bike. Mine weighs in at about 17lbs. It's a perfect all around bike for me. It climbs very nicely, descends well, holds speeds very well. Quick & nimble too. The first thing you notice is the quick acceleration and how well power transfers to the rear wheel. Oh yeah, and it looks sweet. Very comfy ride, but I've never been on anything but Alu, so I have nothing to compare it to. I prefer feeling the road underneath me since I'm used to it from riding cross & mountain. It's much smoother than my Trek X01 cross bike when I used it on the road w/ slicks.

If you like Alu and still want something shiny and new that isn't a boat anchor this is blingalicious:

For some reason this one is only listed as available in the US ... and I'm serioulsy thinking of getting this frame - Scandium and gorgeous looking:

"scandium" and aluminum are the same thing, almost all aluminum alloys have the same percentage of scandium as "scandium".

Marketing Bullshidium.

The team soloist is very comfortable, and very light. Top 3 ally frame out there.
Look's warranty is mediocre, but owners love them. Weight could be better.

Not sure if someone mentioned this: but as far as I know, LOOK's are made in France at the LOOK factory. Scott on the other hand is made in Taiwan at a scott/carbon manufacturer.

my vote is also for the look.

LOOks are made by cheaper labor in Tunisia, not France.

"Look Moves to Africa

Look Bicycles have transferred the production of carbon frames and forks to a factory in the former French colony of Tunisia in Africa. The move is said to add production capacity, as turnover has doubled in the last three years to € 23.4 million, with USA being their main export market."

I believe I have one of the last LOOK forks made in France then. Perhaps this can become a point of pride as my Italian made Bianchi is : o

I'm not sure if it really should matter where a bike frame or fork is manufactured. What matters is where and more importantly, by whom, it is designed / engineered. Almost every industry outsources to third party manufacturers these days, so I think the most important thing is that company that designs, engineers (and markets) the frame technology has a good quality control program that rejects defective products that arrive from their third party partners, and that stands by their products with good warranty policy. I know it's kind of romantic to think about your "French" bike being hand built by a Frenchman or "Italian" bike being built by an Italian (or "Canadian" by a Canadian for that matter), but that is simply not how our global economy works in the 21st century. Sorry to go on about this, but it seems like every day we see posts that suggest that bikes that are manufactured in Taiwan or Algeria or Timbuktu are in inferior, and I just don't see that happening. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the quality of labor in Taiwain is equal to or better than that which assembles Cannondale or Trek products in the USA.

Yeah yeah yeah; there've been billions of posts about that. But as once upon a time there were lots of top end bikes being made by mad Frenchmen, I'm curious whether there are any anymore - more for the sense of history than for quality (hey, I had to send my Time pedals back for a recall lately; I'm not automatically assuming that because it's European, it's great [hell, the French make Citroens - proof that European doesn't often mean great]).

Well, I hope my searching for the perfect frame has come to an end...with this:

Any opinions? - it's a Wilier Izoard full carbon frameset going for £500 used ($970). Should I hop on it before someone else does?

Regardless, it's all about quality control and skill training. Dealing with unions in France is oppressive, the smart money is to get out.
Generalizations are dangerous, a lot of crap is made in Italy.
