Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Setting up my TT bike

Hey all, I run a Trek Madone 5.2 SL and have a bit of a "psuedo TT kit" going on it. Profile Design S-Bends, FF seatpost, tri saddle. Anyways I've got a printout here from competitive cyclists bike fitter and it has some measurements for the drop I should be getting off my aerobars. It seems REALLY low. How can I attain such a drastic drop on my road frame, swap spacers and stem every time I TT? At the moment I run a 130mm stem at 7 degrees, I could go to something shorter and steeper (it's flipped ) to get me lower but right now I'm at around 109 mm above the ground for my pad height, and it says I should get it to 97.3 (min) or 85.2 (max) as well as a saddle to aerobar pad drop of 8.4 (min) to 20.5 (max) thanks for any help. Any other tips on achieving a good TT position are welcome. So far I have the post and saddle set up to spec quite easily it's just the aerobars that are being a problem.

quite simply.... yes.

you do have to drop the stem to get lower. there's no magical solution to instantly turn a road bike into a pure TT bike and back again... which is why they sell TT specific bikes.

anything else is and always will be a compromise.

however- if you want convenient adjustability... you may look into a stem by LOOK, i think its called the ergo-stem or something like that. it has two hinges so you can really fit it to any height/angle/length you need to with a simple allen key.

but if youre just complaining that once tuning your road bike into TT dimensions it may be uncomfortable... then yes. that's all you can do.

Not complaining really, just seeing if I'm doing everything possible. I'll look into the Look stem.

best to be careful with the Look ergostems - they have a bit of a reputation for loosening. I'd look into a cheap adjustable stem to get your position straight and then see if you can find a normal stem to replicate you position (some mountain bike stems have goofy angles and whatnot). Best just to make up two cockpits for your bike complete with cables and housing and have them so you can just swap them back and forth.
