Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

To answer the original question:

Call Virenque and tell him you want the "Festina stuff, but not the watch."

No, just like Richard, someone injected him with drugs without his approval/knowledge.

Edit: Wow, this thread has developed into a full blown Festina-bash

Learn some facts, then come back with the smug reply. Wust was not on the 1998 Festina tour team.

That was a tongue-in-cheek comment. And yes, I know that fact.

Just looked it up, he won KOM in the prologue, and held it for a couple of days during the flat stages of the 2000 tour - so he's hardly what you'd call a tour climber. Still impressive, but he's no Pantani...

Here's some additional info, from Frankie Andreu's Tour diary:

After the time trial there was not another climb for three days. That's a lot of free publicity. When I hit the climb I started sprinting as hard as I could, I went great at the bottom but died at the top. When I crossed the line at the top of the climb I had so much lactic acid I could taste it. I had to coast for a kilometer to recover and then try to finish the rest of the time trial. That stinkin' sprinter Marcel Wust ended up getting the jersey, he beat everyone by about ten seconds.
