Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Helmet Cam and a ride

So I got my new helmet cam today. I did not get it for cycling only but thought it would be cool....I don't have a helmet mount so I used some tape....well needless to say I got the cam pointed a little down so you see the road a LOT....lol next time I will do better....I have a few more tests to run. It recorded 1 hour and 39 min of the ride (our whole ride).

Ok so there are 2 videos of the same thing...the first one is small and grainy, something for the web....you get the idea....

https://www.vsstech.com/helmet_cam1.wmv

The second one is Mpg2...640X480 full everything.....

https://www.vsstech.com/helmet_cam2.mpg

Finally let me set the stage for the clip. We were stuck in traffic and waiting for it to move....when it started to move I merged in. This lady got really mad....honked and ran up on me...I got mad and started to use the whole lane....she passes me just to stop and the light 50 ft away......I pass her again and she tries to turn in to me....I take the whole lane again and then she passes and takes off..I sure did not "help" the situation, I realize it would have been better to ignore her but we were all in traffic...BUT I do think it is funny that I had my new helmet cam on and it is on video....lol

Remember the second one is LARGE 82 meg...save it to your HD and view it....the small one is 3.12 meg....it streams fine....

Enjoy.....

Very nice signals you gave. She sure did close to you on her pass...she deserved whatever you could give.

Amazing. I'll bet you could catch an awful lot of interesting things with that cam while riding....

Did anyone else keep trying to lift your head to see more of the road ahead? I kept finding myself tilting my head back, as though that would help!

We were sort of pressed for time today so I did not have a chance to "check" how it was all going on the recorder.....Monday will be a nice day here....I hope to get some more time and figure our where it needs to be mounted....

I am very happy with it so far....I am sure I will be able to catch so funny things here and there...it was very windy today....15 to 20 mph so the mic was loud BUT I am still happy with it.

I got real mad at the lady and acted like an A$$...now I am not so mad about it all...I was pretty surprised she was attacking me with her car....that was a little over the top...scared my girlfriend a bit....in hind site I just should have ignored her...or stuck with the finger salute....lol

Now I am imaging everyone watching it and tilting there head back....too funny

Cool, cool! Nice hand signals, btw!

And yeah, maybe angle the cam up a little to get more of the scenery.

That's why I want to get a helmet cam some time. If someone does stuff like that, I would try to make sure to get a clear shot of the plate number and file a complaint.

Why did you jump back in front of her after she passed you the first time? It seems to me you could have just taken the lane directly behind her when she stopped.

Could you describe your set-up, where you got the parts, and about what it cost? There are a couple of gut-wrenching descents around here I would like to film for BF and my relatives.

+1. I was also thinking it might be nice to record races so I could better analyze where I made mistakes after the race. What make/model is this? How big and/or heavy is it? price?

Cool. Have you tried to put a piece of foam over the mic to cut down on the roar?

Cool. I have the Archos 604 as well and the cam.

I've filmed a few rides as well but am still working out the logistics of mounting it. Filmed my Saturday ride actually. Some guy with a fat butt drafted off me on the tailwind and would not pull, and when I finally forced him to the front on the headwind, he blew snot...got it on film...so I recovered a bit then launched off his fat ass like a rocket ship and didn't even give him the chance to draft anymore...I will post that clip...soon

The headband strap that comes with it is problematic for road riding in that when it is angled in the upward position, too much sky. When angled downward, too much road. I have mounted it on my handlebars, taped to a cateye light (which has a swivel mount), but I can't eliminate the vibrations, even with foam padding underneath. Carbon frame and 19c 120 psi tires produce lots of vibrations....

Next I am going to try to suspend it from the bars in a sling, maybe with a small bean bag or something. I will edit out a few clips from some of the rides and post it.

Cool toy but the low res is annoying for all the effort. I am almost ready to buy the Sony camera and recorder which is higher quality. The mpg4 format pixelizes when riding fast. I need to find a way to muffle the wind on the mike and it is too bad the control buttons are on the same side of the switch as the mike. I want to tape the mike to the carbon frame facing inward to capture the hollow clicking sound of the shifting and freewheeling.

(BTW, I paid $300.00 for the recorder and $114.00 for the camera online)

I'm not the OP, VV, but in reply (I have the same camera), I plan to start filming all my rides and just grabbing the best clips to put into a highlights film as they happen.

I know what you mean about the tilt. It is frustrating and once he works out the logistics (as I am doing so now as well) it will look a lot nicer. Mounting it on my bike I solved the tilt, but now I get too much vibration. A TV sound man just showed me a shock aborber he uses on his boom mike and it looks like a good solution.

Just filming a few rides I've already collected some interesting stuff...

I ordered a few mounts from here

https://www.viosport.com/

Hopefully that will help with the mounting of it on my helmet it should help with adjustments for sure. There are for sure "levels" in helmet cams....I like the level I am at. It is not the greatest BUT it is good and I am ok with that. I recorded my whole ride....an hour 30's worth. That is pretty good with 450 worth of equipment. The next level is out of my price range. I want a new set of cranks first...lol

I am going to wait for the mounts to get here for the next ride. It is really hard to adjust the camera when you just taped it to the helmet.....the new mount should help a lot....I will post up some more video when I get it. Also if you guys have any I would like to see it as well....

Looking forward to the posts. Maybe we should have a sticky for posting helmet cam clips. Might be fun.

I'll post some soon. Do you have video edting software to cut and slice mpeg4 clips? Not sure if my Quicktime Pro handles that format, but maybe Widnows Movie Maker can...

What helmet mount did you order from viosport? I want one that swivels around so I can adjust it where I want it...

I have been taping mine on top of this cateye light, which swivels...

I got the UNIVERSAL MOUNT and the DOUBLE HOOK & LOOP MOUNT....I will be using the cam on my Jeep as well so I will be needing to make a few mounts......

I use Ulead....it does MPEG4 and is pretty easy to use....I have used it for a bit over a year I guess....it was only 100 bucks too....

https://www.offroadoverstock.com/videos/moaba.wmv

Above is a mixture of video and still I did last year in Moab....sorry no biking in it...but you get an idea or what Ulead can do....

just a short clip from my archos recorder. I used the av-500 recorder with a sony 580 line camera and a power runner battery pack. the higher resolution helps out a bit when uploading to you-tube.
