Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone know if the Aliante sport is the same as the Aliante gamma?

no, the Sport isn't the same thing as the Gamma, they're different saddles. the Gamma replaced the Aliante with titanium rails from last year, and the Sport is an OEM saddle that you will only find on a new bike. like botto said though, they're on ebay every day, for about $60 or so...

i highly doubt they feel that much different though. i tried a Aliante last year, and while it was very comfortable, it still caused some numbness...

Wow I did the same thing. I spent a year on my airone with lots of numbness and everyone telling me how great it was and just keep adjusting. I just couldnt stand it anymore and switched to the aliante and cant be happier. Great saddle. its funny how some people hate the aliante and love the airone and vice versa.

Me and that flat airone just didnt get along. I like the dip in the aliante.

It's not hard to find like new Sports on ebay for $30. The biggest difference I can tell from the regular Aliante is the plastic shell and a synthetic cover. My butt survey says the Sport's plastic shell feels a bit harder than the carbon shell on the regular but I get used to it over time.

I found a brand new silver and gray carbon Aliante on ebay that was a take off for $90.00 which goes with the silver paint on my Colnago Dream perfect. Couldn't justify spending over $150.00 for a saddle but wanted to see if the Aliante was as good as everyone says.

a harder/firmer shell is more desirable than a bouncy CF shell.

Interesting to hear the differing opinions of the Sport/Gamma vs the Carbon shell models. I'm riding a carbon shell model I've been borrowing and really like it. Suppose for the price they for on ebay, I could get a Sport and try it out for a few weeks and throw it back up on ebay if it doesn't work out.

another difference, if you look, is that carbon shell has a slightly larger cut out than the plastic shell. i don't know if that contributes to the different feel, but i'm guessing it does...

My litespeed came with the sport model, when I sat on it first I felt like just sitting there and taking a nap it was so comfortable.

Is the part of the underside of the saddle that looks like something should clip in made for these fizik bags and lights? What all can clip in there?

Former Brooks Saddle Promoter

I was experimenting w/saddles, and took off my beloved Brooks Colt, replacing it with my friends' Aliante. I am amazed to report that the Aliante is the most comfortable sadddle I have ever ridden -- by a long shot. This is the first saddle that I have ever used that "disappears."

i just posted this as a new thread and then i saw this thread:
Recently bought a Fizik Aliante saddle after reading all the rave reviews about how its the most comfortable saddle ever. I was expecting something really great. So the saddle comes, and i take it out for a ride, and to my surprise, it feels like any $10 standard plastic saddle with 2mm of padding and a vinyl cover. And then i realized something, and I really think I'm right about this but correct me if i'm not. the term "comfort" in relation to road saddles really refers to the weight/discomfort ratio-- finding the most lightweight saddle with an acceptable level of discomfort--that is, "comfort" really means "not that uncomfortable". the Fizik Aliante is not uncomfortable, but neither is a the $10 vinyl/plastic saddle. so i guess its really just all about saving that 300 grams? has the $10 standard generic vinyl/plastic saddle become the standard for luxury due to its lack of overwhelming discomfort? If i made a saddle that weighed 100 grams and felt just like a $10 saddle from the 70's would i win awards too? My real question is.. are there any SOFT saddles in production? And since the term comfort no longer refers to comfort, is "soft" an acceptable replacement term?"

There's not a saddle made that will be comfy if you aren't used to sitting on a saddle. Once your butt gets used to sitting, your shorts, the saddle shape and the alignment of the moon will have more to do with how well *you* get along with it on a given day than the saddle's weight. Personally, there are days my Aliante disappears and days it doesn't (the day after a really long ride, for example). Even on the "bad" days, it's by far the most comfortable non-Brooks saddle I've used.

Just like Jesus to make us all feel bad for lusting after a saddle.

That said....still trying to decide between my Toupe or Aliante. Both have merits. I'll need to put more miles on the Aliante before I decide.

I have the Aliante Ti (carbon shell) on one bike and the Aliante Sport on the other. I can't really detect any difference at all. I'm pretty happy with them on the whole.

I was walking by the pit at the CSC Invitational Saturday and noticed that practically every one of the spare bikes in there had the Arione, except for two with the Aliante. So if you're trying to look like a pro....

I switched my Arione to the Aliante gamma I had waiting to put a on a new frame last week. I found the Arione to be a good saddle but the seams a slight discomfort. Put 400 km on the Aliante over the last week, long rides, short fast rides and slow recovery ride and this saddle does just disappear. I'm very impressed. Will be ordering a new one for when the new frame arrives.

If your sit bones are properly supported, you don't need a cut out. None of my saddles have cut outs and I've never had any numbness or anything (Arione, Selle Italia SLR, bontrager select saddles).

My problem with the Aliante is that it was not a good saddle when I was in the drops. Plus, depending on the type of ride (flats, ascent or descent), I move back and forth along the saddle. You just cannot do that with the Aliante. Essentially- you get it to fit when on the hoods, and your stuck there.

Yes, yes, and yes. I got the bag because I already had a tail light attached to my seat post and I attached another tail light to the loop on the bag. My LBS carries the lights and recommends them instead of the bag and purchasing a generic seat bag. It works either way so I guess it is personal preference.

I got the medium bag which is not all that big but I reduced the number of things I carried and got the essentials in. I really was carrying a lot of things that I never used on the road and I needed to get rid of the extra weight anyway. I was concerned that the clip might not hold the bad securely enough with all the weight that I had but so far no problems.

If I were starting from scratch I would probably buy the light and get a larger generic bag than Fizik currently offers.

I just have both the light and the bigger Fizik bag. Sometimes I use the light and a small Timbuk2 bag, and sometimes I use the Fizik bag. The clip-in/clip-out feature is exceptionally convenient.

Between the Arione and Aliante, I have no opinion -- I'm trying out a Pave CP for now. Both the Arione and Aliante are on my list, though, which is how I found this thread.

I rode on a Aliante for a while and it was SUPREMELY comfortable on my sitbones. It made me go numb though unfortunately (I've tried adjusting it 100 different ways). I'm on a Toupe now and although I don't go numb, it's a bit harsher on my sitbones (although not bad).

The trick with the Aliante to avoid numbness is to position it far enough forward so your sit bones are all the way on the back of the saddle. Then tilt it down a few degrees (mine is tilted 3 degrees). The tilt isn't needed for flat or gently rolling terrain but when you do steeper climbs, because of the backward tilt of the bike, you need a bit more clearance between the nose of the saddle and your 'taint.

As my 3 year old would say " prepare to be amazed", I am completely. The funny thing is, it doesn't look like anything special. Somthing to be said for keep it simple maybe.

I was a bit hesitant to drop that kind of money on a saddle ( went with the carbon w/ carbon rails) but for me, it was worth every penny.
Not to knock the Arione, I am guessing if I spent more time in the drops or on a tri bike, the Arione might be better for getting more positions.
+1 I have one too and my butt loves it.
