Road Tar

How do I get rid of road tar on my downtube? Just had the bike powder coated and don't want
to use something which may damage it.
Thank You.

Bikes: A few.

The damage may well be done already.
Two options:
Freeze it off (canned air, ice, whatever) and try to chip it off.
Use tar remover and hope for the best.

Nafta Gets it off. Its in charcoal lighter fluid and ronsinal fluid for Zippo lighters. A degreaser may also work. It should not harm the finish but I would do a small spot first.

Road Tar-Solved

Thanks for the two replies. I called the manufacturer who did the powder coating and he
suggested a degreaser. I asked about WD-40 and he said that would work fine and I may
need to put some wax on it later to bring out the shine.
Well I tried WD-40 and it came off with ease and I did not have to wax or buff it. So I
recommend it to others for road tar. My powder coat is on a steel tubed bike and it looks
like new.

I have used vegetable oil. Another option is Dawn dishwashing soap.

Ask the Powder Coater before you try Naphtha.

Some liquid car "waxes" (Nu-Finish for one) will remove road tar as well as polish the finish.
