Beat the guy up all you want but he is still correct. Many cyclists assume they own the road and that is irritating to alot of drivers including myself.

These articles are multiplying like flies. The B'ham News also ran an op-ed piece about running 3-4 abreast and through stop signs. Bob Sans-a-belt is just one of the many newsrag stories we can expect with the warm weather. But quit riding more than 2 abreast! Let cars pass and most will be happy.

THe difference is that this article includes real knowledge of laws, speaks to both sides of the argument, and proposes solutions to the problem. Granted, I'm not a fan of some of here solutions, but at least she's trying

It's reporters.
I'm not talking about the ones who actually report stories or comment on actual important issues. I've got no problem with them.
I'm talking about the other columnists...the overweight, sports columnists.
And not all of them!
Just the ones who don't bother actually opining on real issues or try any athletic endeavors themselves (you know – actually trying to experience the pain and suffering the athletes they comment on go through every single day!)
I know it's still a bit of stretch for the reporter bunch to be writing about cycling, but as we get closer to the Tour de France, they will be thicker than mosquitoes in many of our sports pages.
And I'm dreading it.
Let me be clear: Many of these reporters are fine. They do what they're supposed to do. They obey the rules. It's the other ones.
The ones who write without any knowledge, talent or idea as to what cycling is, what cyclists do, and show absolutely no effort in really getting to know the sport before they write their 5th grade level prose throughout the land.
The ones who declare Lance Armstrong the greatest cyclist ever and have never heard of Merckx.
The ones who refuse to retire or actually put effort into their columns because, well, they think they're Edward R. Murrow.
Well, I got news for them.
They're not Edward R. Murrow.
And even if they were, they still should kill themselves NOW!!!

You can say what you want about Sansevere and his views on cyclist but portraying KSTP as a 3rd rate news organization just because they have Sansevere on is way off base. Go check Nielsen Media Research numbers sometime.

I have no problem with the article. However, it certainly doesn't seem like a newsworthy issue to me in any way. It's just a silly rant from a silly man. Happens every day ... move on ... nothing to see here.

Bob,
Are things really so boring in St. Paul
that a lame-brained local TV dude like you
feels a need to unload on friggin CYCLISTS??
That’s what we cyclists need – some idiot like you
to get MORE homicidal motorists after us.
That had to be one of the most lame-brained, irresponsible
pieces of hack hooey I’ve ever read on the Internet.
Get a life. In the meantime, run over a cyclist or two, I doubt
they’ll even give you a traffic ticket.

Considering it's on KSTP, I'm thinking even if they aired it there would be maybe five people out of a market of 4m that would see it. For good reason, they suck. Having had some professional dealings with them I'll say their ratings reflect their journalistic integrity. I've never seen a station stage manage news like they do.
Having said that, Bob does make a few points that are perfectly reasonable--about all road users.

I don't see a problem with what that person said. Those kind of riders give all cyclists a bad name. Do I follow all rules? Nope, but I do it with safety first. I would rather wait for the red light if there are cars around and then get home to my wife and kids in one piece.

Seriously, our first obligation is our safety - the second is the law. Don't mix them up.

Is this guy serious? Well, here's what I left him in his mail box for tomorrow morning while he's finishing his Krispy Kreme assorted dozen...
You say cyclists need to learn to follow the rules? Listen, I was hit by a truck that ran a stop sign while I was on my bike. Do you know how many times I've almost been side-swiped by motorists? Do you have any idea how many objects have been tossed at me out of car's windows? Have you any idea what's it's like to have someone scream something out their window when all you're doing is going out for a ride, trying to keep in shape? And one more question, why write something like this garbage when you could use the time and space to remind people that cars don't own the road and that it's not funny to screw with the minds of cyclist by honking at them when you get right behind them, or trying to cut them off or push them off the road. More than once have I tapped a driver's window at a stop light and scared the living day lights out of them. It's not so funny when it happens to you. Maybe next time, instead of sending out a message to the public that we don't belong on the road; I understand that wasn't the intention of your article, but believe it or not, it's merely fuel and they will take it the wrong way because it's in black and white and for some reason they believe that the folks writing for our papers are highly trained, intelligent people and that it "must be true". So, perhaps a nice follow-up to this piece would be how bicycling helps combat the obesity problem facing Americans. Maybe that would be worth reading.
Jon
PS; The "Lance Armstrong wannabe's" comment struck a chord with me. You do realize that cycling has been a sport since before 1992, right? It's nothing new, it's grown in the past decade not because an American won a few Tour's, but because some people have become more health conscious. Perhaps we wouldn't look so bad in the eye's of other nations if we all took up the fine hobby, sport and social activity that is cycling.
Just some food for thought before you spout off on a topic that you obviously know nothing about.

The whole point of the article is to make generalizations about cyclists without providing any substance just to get everyone's dander up. Most of the problem here is that drivers do not understand the rights of bicyclists, including Bob Sansevere. Most of the people I know think that if you ride a bicycle, you are obligated to ride on the sidewalk but in fact the law states that bicycles are legal to operate in all traffic lanes, except where bike lanes are present.
Bicyclists have all the same rights as all other vehicles. They may operate in a traffic lane, for example, except when a designated bike lane is present. Bicycles are not required to ride on shoulders or sidewalks or even on adjacent bike paths or trails—they are in fact discouraged from doing so. - https://www.sharetheroadmn.org/rules.html
I'm know that most people ride on the shoulder when doing so is safe but there are times when riding in traffic cannot be avoided. The fact that he says that bicyclists refuse to move over when in traffic just shows that he doesn't understand the rules. If he wanted to really get the news out, he'd talk about the rules of the road.
