How long can you sustain riding at 90% HRM?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nope. Just before it hits the ground.

If you answered over 15 minutes, you need to recalculate your Max and work on your sprint - you're spending too much time on endurance.

Based on a predicted max of 191, I've held 90% for over half an hour straight-up, and probably closer to 45min or more if you discount a few minor dips. Thing is, if the terrain is rolling at all or if you are working with someone there may be times when your effort drops a bit. The easiest way for me to consistently hit high HR is on a climb or in a race. The only climb I would do around here at 90% effort only takes about 17 minutes and then I have to cross a highway to continue it, so my HR will drop as I wait to cross. Not that I would do both climbs at that effort anyway. The longer climbs I won't go as hard because I'd rather do a consistent effort over the climb than go hard at the bottom and blow up. Probably the hardest I've gone for the longest was this weekend on a "race simulation" type training ride, where I bridged up to a break and stayed away until the regroup at the top of a climb (although a few of the freako climbers bridged up and my original breakmates were dropped).

Did you have a special reason to reply to a one year old post, other than to bump your own thread?
