Google Map Pedometer. Check your route!

I was questioning the accuracy of my computer and it dawned on me to check my bike computer results with Google pedometer. I checked a routine route that I ride and it was within a couple tenths of what my computer says.

If you aren't already familiar, check it out: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

if you use toporoute.com, you get elevation too.

I believe that toporoute only follows roads so if you're on a MUP/T you can't use toporoute at all! Please correct me if I'm wrong and show me how to do this. Thanks!

Uncheck "Follow Road"

Those online programs use a series of straight lines (yes, even if it's using "follow the road") so I'd question how accurate it is. Pie doesn't come into the equasion when it calculates mileage. For that reason, it's more accurate on straight roads than on twisty ones.

Just draw more points, you'll get pretty darn close.

Easier said than done. Try mapping this and getting "darn close":

Start at PCH and Topanga Cyn
PCH west
Latigo Cyn north
Kanan Rd north
Mulholland Hwy east
Cold Cyn south
Piuma east
Schueren east
Saddle Peak Rd east
Tuna Cyn south
PCH east
End at PCH and Topanga Cyn

I kid you not it takes me about 2 hours each time (I've tried 3 times and routeslip.com gets an error saving it each time) and it comes up 1-2 miles short and 2000' over on the elevation gain. OK so this has nothing productive to add to the thread, but it was a convenient excuse to rant :D

Just tried the toporoute.com and it worked fairly well. Anyway to get it to total up elevation for total climb?

ReconRider 04-18-07 06:07 PM

another site is usa track & field page.

http://www.usatf.org/routes/map/

sure, it says it's for running but you can do everything you can with the aformentioned sites and more and it's about as easy as anything i've ever used.

tracks elevation, giving totals as well for the trip. it's accurate to within a tenth of what my cyclocomputer says.
