Please help identify this Campagnolo group?
Hi. Please help me identify this group. Mirage? Mix of different groups? It was described to me as a 14 speed Campagnolo Super - is there something wrong with me or is it a 10 speed... Mirage? I'm sure some of you guys will have the eyes to spot this in a split second. Much appreciated.
Thanks!! http://www.netsurfaces.com/images/cr...ersfiets-3.jpg http://www.netsurfaces.com/images/cr...ersfiets-4.jpg |
Some looks like older Chorus to me: skewer ends and RD. Cranksets have some subtle distinctions that I'm not always familiar with, and the brakes I've seen but no idea as to group.
Edit- actually the RD is not quite like mine (does it say record on it, can't tell), but the FD does look like my older Chorus. |
The RD says Mirage. I'd like to know if this is a whole group or a mix of parts... The bike was purchased in the 90s according to the previous owner. Thanks!

Came across a site recently that had all of the Campagnolo catalogues for the past twenty or thirty years in PDF. Damned if I can remember the address now.

I didn't look but I have some of those cranks and derailleurs. They line spread from Athena (most common) to Chorus. I don't recall Mirage. Is that a Davidson frame? cdr |

Unfortunately I don't have access to the bike for another week and these are all the photos I have. I just did a lot of reading and am now even more confused than before with this Campagnolo stuff ;) What do I have on my hands!
The bike was custom built and put together in the late 90s. The person it was built for maintains that the components are Campagnolo Super, which could be another way of saying "Campagnolo Mix" maybe, but not "Super Record" as it turns out. The brake calipers look to me like "higher end" (relative to Mirage) like Chorus or Athena, as do the cranks (never seen photos of older Mirage cranks but the fact they show only the Campagnolo logo without writing?)... The RD could have been a "downgrade" to save a bit of money or indeed a later replacement? I'd just like to have a more precise idea of what this all means or what to look at when I go to pick up the bike and a general idea of its worth, considering I would not necessarily want a group hodge podge of parts, unless I am missing something. cdr, the frame maker is "DERIJKE" (Belgium). How did you figure out it was a custom? Thank you for any information, again! |
I certainly wouldn't worry about a mix of Campy parts, even if there are a few lower group pieces thrown in there. Might affect the price you would be willing to pay and your negotiating power, however.
You might want to cross-post this in C&V. This is not really vintage, but there are guys that frequent that Forum that know the groups inside and out. |

From what I can see the brakes, brake levers and crank are either Athena or Chorus. Both came with 7 sp freewheels and some even with a cassette. I tend to think Athena on the brakes as they aren't Monoplaner. When Chorus dropped the Monoplaner brakes for dual pivot, Athena used them for a few years. The Chorus Monoplaners used the old Record type squared brake pad holders. The Mirage/Athena Monoplaners used the one piece brake pads.
The skewers are definitely Mirage. Athena/Chorus skewer ends were round and chromed. They also had a knurled band on them. The derailleurs have the satin finish of Mirage. Chorus and Athena were highly polished. The more I look at it the more I think it's Mirage. The brakes look too nice for Mirage though. Whatever it is, sure looks nice. You could probably sell the parts on ebay and just upgrade the frame. Good luck Tim |
I'm disagreeing with cs1 on a few things. I have early 90's chorus hubs and FD on my Bertoni, and the FD has some sheen but is not highly polished, and my skewer ends look exactly like that.

I don't think Mirage exist then... I think Xenon was the low end range, with sprayed painted surface. Correct me if I am wrong.

I have a 99 Univega with Mirage but its Ergo. I too don't recall an earlier non-Ergo Mirage but I don't claim omnipotence. I agree with Cyclotoine's ID (on the C&V thread) of the brakes and the relative uniformity of non-Record seatposts.
I have a set of Chorus hubs from mid90s and yours are similar but I can't positively ID them. Never heard of a Campy "Super" group and that definitely is not a Super Record set-up. Not even close as the SR rear der. is not a slant parallelogram model. Frame looks really clean. Great deal at the price. |
