Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Deja vu

So I'm in the Bay Area visiting the folks on vacation aiming for about 200-250 miles a week while I'm here. So anyways on Monday I did a quick out and back from Walnut Creek to Sunol (40 miles about). On the way back between Dublin and before Alcosta Blvd I had a rear flat. Checked the tire and there's 1/2 cm gash in the tire. Okay. So I replace the tube, put in the CO2 and head home. Went to a LBS and got the same tire to replace the back one. Tues did the skyline loop and Weds did the Bear Creek road loop - awesome as always. Today I decided to ride an easy 18-20mph tempo ride to Sunol again - its easy and I'm kinda tired. On the way back from Sunol, my rear tire practically explodes - a full herringbone shaped tear from sidewall to sidewall. Maybe it was a pinch, but i had already ridden a hundred miles on it. Anyways the flat happened literally at the exact same spot as on Monday. Right before it happened, I was thinking "this is about where my flat was on monday". I came to a stop and I saw cleat marks from where I was walking around the previous time. I walked back a hundred yards or so looking for something that could have caused it, but really nothing. The roads here are much nicer the LA for that matter. I had to call a friend for ride because the rear tire was toast. I'm out 50 bucks for that tire. I've been meaning to try some Conti 4000s. I guess I have a reason now. Anyways kind of an amusing story.

It was probably a sniper hired by the nearest bike shop to rustle up some business.
