Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

To OP: do not over analyse this. You aren't getting married! Buy some shorts that appeal to you in your price range. Chances are, if you've never used shorts before, you'll be very, very happy. Then, if/when you want or need some others, you'll have a point of reference. By the way, I have two pair of shorts, neither bibs (never had a need for them, and generally avoid bib clothing of any type, just don't like them). One pair is the cheapest Performance brand that was available about 4 years ago. The other is some fairly expensive shorts (can't remember name off hand right now) my kids bought me for father's day last summer. I like both and both are DEFINITELY better than not wearing bike shorts. The expensive ones "might" be better, but the cheap ones work just fine. I have NO DOUBT the expensive ones are better made and will last longer, but they were much more expensive also. I don't do really long rides, 20-40 miles at a time, so YMMV. I suspect, quality might make more of a difference for more hard core riders than me.

I've done a century wearing Performance Century shorts, and will be doing another one this weekend. They work fine for long distance rides, and I have a pretty tender butt. I have two pairs, and they've held up very well indeed. I agree on the gel shorts; they feel OK, but they're too thick a chamois, and they don't last.

I bought a couple of pair of Falconi shorts off ebay for $25 or so each. Someone else here highly recommended them and, frankly, they were just ok. The chamois is a bit on the thin side and one pair started separating at the seams after a couple of months. That kind of soured me on cheap shorts.

Later I bought a pair of Performance Ultra shorts on sale for about $60 which were much better all around. You have to be careful buying online, though, as the sizes seem to run a bit small.

I now have 4 pair of Pearl Izumi Attack shorts which are just excellent. Very comfy with high quality materials and they've held up extremely well to repeated washings. They list for $70 but you can catch them on sale every now and then for $50-55. They are probably worth $70 but they are definitely worth $55. I'm pretty sure I'll get several years service out of these.

I didn't feel like doing laundry and had no clean underwear today, so I wore a pair of shorts.

I don't know how you can guys get a right size when buying online for the first time. I'm 31 waist and have yet to find a medium size shorts or bibs that would fit me. Always have to go for large ones. Waist size is fine in medium but my thighs are "strangled".

My advice to the OP: Visit your LBS and try a few pairs. Buy whatever fits you best, in your price range. Later, if you can find the same/similar cut/brand online, at least you'll know the correct size to order My few pennies...

I bought two pairs of pricepoint shorts (they were 15 bucks) and I rode maybe 8 miles in them. They felt ok, I returned them because of really bad quality.

I bought a pair of P.I.'s for 50 bucks and I can tell you that the chamois feels a helluva lot better. I rode 17 miles in them today (my first group ride, very very hilly) and I got a little chaffed. I'm not completely sure why...

The pricepoint shorts were small and I remember that they fit me pretty snugly, the PI shorts are also small but fit differently i.e the chamois isn't in contact with my skin when I'm not sitting, is this normal? Also, i felt like they were moving around when I was riding today (maybe i just got them caught on my saddle's nose, hmm).

I'm not trying to hijack the thread, just saying it's probably a good idea to buy a first pair of shorts from an lbs, that way you can be sure everything fits. Then if you like the shorts, order more online.
(answer my questions too, pretty please?)

Performance ultras have been on sale recently for $60 for shorts, $70 for bibs. I'm impressed with my ultra bibs. There are better bibs out there, but for the money, the ultras are great.

A little outside your stated budget, but if you can spring for it, they're worth it.
Also, remember that Performance bibs and shorts seem to run small(er) than some other brands. I wear mediums in Pearl Izumi, but need larges in performance.

You'd probably be happy with any of the suggestions you've been given.

+1 on the Ultra shorts. Good stuff.

Re: Bibs
Very few can articulate a real reason why they're so much better than shorts if you don't get rashes, have hemorrhoids nor are obese enough to have a waistband negatively affect your bladder. This doesn't mean they aren't a lot better than shorts. Past BF threads have mentioned a lot of negatives about bibs. They can be ill fitting (be too long in the torso or too short), chaffe the shoulders and/or nipples, be too hot, billow your jersey, and more.

I'll have my Assos bibs soon -- people say they're better than shorts. Whatever. I've got to check it out and because cyclists don't wear underwear, I wasn't willing to try on someone else's Assos bibs.

i have a 32-34 waist, and i wear a medium in all PI shorts and most Giordana shorts, except for the Giordana Tenax Laser shorts. the only Giordana that's in the OP budget is the Silverline, and they stretches a lot, so i'm sure he can fit into a medium. i had 2 pairs of PI Attack's and 2 pairs of PI Ultrasensor's, and i own 2 pairs of Giordana Tenax, and they're all mediums...

you can't go wrong with any Giordana's, the Tenax is by far and away my favorite short, ever...

Performance is having a sale on their brand of clothing, so if you want to snag some clothes, go for it!

Seems like most of those who have suggested different shorts haven't tried bibs. Those who have "almost" always say they won't go back. Count me in, will only wear bibs now.

I have 6 pairs of XL shorts anybody can have, range from 2 years to 9 years old.

A friend of mine gave me some good advice when starting cycling, do not skimp, save money, go for cheap on your clothing.

I bought a pair of the cheap Pricepoint shorts a couple years ago when financially challenged, and wore them for one ride. the chamois was like sandpaper. back to the PI's for me.

picked up a couple pair of the 2007 PI Ultrasensor Slice from Excel when they were like $20 off. these are kinda neat, cause in addition to the elastic waist band, they also have a drawstring, which my last pair of Ultrasensor shorts from 2005 didn't have. a new addition? also bought a pair of last years Ultrasensor bib shorts from the local PI outlet store for $82, my first pair of bibs. Had one ride with them so far, and except for the increased sweating where the front panel of the bibs covers, I liked them.

with shorts, it seems you get what you pay for. trying to save some cash by going cheap doesn't seem to work, at least for me.

Yeah, I totally agree. I thought the PI shorts were bunching up on the back, but that was only so they'd be tight when sitting on a saddle. The chamois on them seems awesome.

That leads to my next point, I'm riding a BD bike on their saddle. It's not all that comfy, it felt fine when i went for short rides, and I really need to adjust it now. I'm not set up right on it so I got chaffed :-(
I really need to take some time out and set myself up on the bike!

(As a side note, my left pedal unclips when I'm pulling up on it. Goddammit! I can't spend money on a new saddle and new pedals right now, wahh!!!)
