Possibly the dumbest question ever about computers.
I am totally new to cycling but I just bought my first bike (Lemond-Croix de Fer) and I am installing a computer that includes "cadence" monitoring. The computer is a Cateye model and the instructions come typed in nearly every language except english. The diagram is also a little sketchy as well...here is my question and I thank you ahead of time for your time.
On which side of the crank to I place the "cadence magnet"? On the inside (tire side) of the crank or the outside (pedal side.) You wouldn't believe how corny I feel asking that question....again thanks a ton.

I don't have one but I'm guessing you want it on the inside of the crankarm because it needs to pass close to the sensor (which is presumably mounted to your seat tube or chain stay)

thanks...
that is kind of what I was thinking but the diagram was misleading...thank you very much.....digressing....I just noticed that I first joined this forum in the summer of 05....like an idiot I researched myself into going nowhere until a week ago...(spring 2007)....my advice to every person that has a million questions about what kind of bike to get is to forget about that question and instead research the best LBS in your area and go in and get a proper fitting. Then talk to someone at the bike shop about what bikes are in your price range....most important....just get started....you can worry about all the fashionable parts later when you know what you are actually talking about and have a little experience.....

This is a pic of my cateye comp on my Lemond Tourmalet. You can see the black bar that has Cateye imprinted on it. That is the sensor for the cadence. My magnet is mounted on the inside of my crankarm and positioned no more than 5mm away from the black sensor.
The magnet is inside a small black casing with a glue backing. Peel off the paper and stick it on the crank arm. The is also a small cut out that passes through the casing. I placed a zip tie through it and around the crankarm to make sure it doesn't fall off if the glue fails.
Yes, the instructions SUCK! Believe it or not, this is a $160 computer that a riding partner gave me. He said he didn't want it cause it was difficult to set up and the instructions weren't very clear. Said it was too frustrating so he gave it to me. Wouldn't accept a dime from me. I was able to set it up though cause I'm a genius!

Incorrect.
The dumbest question ever about computers came into the Dell Tech Support line about ten years ago when some older woman asked:
'I can't seem to get this foot pedal to work, what am I doing wrong?'
She was referring to her computer mouse.
That is all.
Incorrect.

Correction, actually dumbest question is:
'Should I just get a Mac?'
The answer to which is invariably: 'yes'.

I also had a problem when installing my wife's cateye computer (astrale 8) I googled and found a much better set of instructions, I believe they were official too.

When I got my computer with a cadence monitor, I think I payed an extra $20 bucks and had the LBS where I got it from install it for me. It was worth it to avoid the hassle.

I love my Cateye Astrale 8, but I agree the directions are horrible even in a language I understand. It took much longer than it should have to install the thing....but it was worth it.

Timely post. I just installed a Sigma 1606L wireless with cadence and it took me three rides to get it dialled in right. For the first ride nothing was working consistently, second ride the cadence was set, by the third ride it worked like a charm. I had to completely go back to square one with respect to reading the instructions again............trying to follow the pictograms............and resetting the computer (when in doubt, CTL.ALT DEL.)

Cateye does have all their instructions on their sit ein PDF -- even the Cateye Solar, which may have been their first computer! (I still have mine.. in a box)
Sigma, a great computer, has instructions that make Cateye look clear and ever so perfect.
