Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do insulated bottles work?

I live in Arizona, and I hate the feeling of drinking 100 degree water. Does anyone have any experience with insulated bottles? This one, for example-

I have those and use them in winter....never had a problem with my water freezing in 20 degree weather.

I've wondered the same, as I can't get 20 mins into a ride before I'm drinking boiling water. I bet this are probably more dishwasher-safe too, right?

I use them-if you fill them with very cold water and some ice, there's still some ice left after a 2-3 hours, even on a very hot day. They also are fine in a dishwasher (just don't use the heated dry cycle). They're not a thermos, but they are much better than a std. water bottle at keeping your drinks at a decent temperature.

JB

edit - I run standard water bottles throught the dishwasher, too, and have never had a problem (just remember to turn off the heated dry cycle).

Freeze your normal bottles (half full). Ride, sip - tepid - as good as it gets!

I threw my water bottle at a car who cut me up - my bad - stupid thing to do - it was still frozen, dented his car.... oooops.

1 lost water bottle and a sprint repeat later all was Zen...

Yeah, they work OK. If you packed one of these and one regular bottle with ice and then water and set them in the sun for a couple hours, the Polar would still have some ice left and the regular bottle would be hot.

They're a little harder to squeeze and the big bottle holds as much as a smaller regular bottle. It sure is nice to have a cold swig on a hot day.

I too live in AZ an would rather drink warm/hot water than a slighlty smaller volume of cold.

This weekend I'm going to do a little experiment with them and I'll post my results.

The trick is to fill it half full and freeze the bottle on its side, then fill up the rest before the ride. Works fine that way.

Yes they do, they're fine for a short ride,I've found that two hours seems to be the limit before the water or Gatorade seems warm.By the time you or the drink is hot enough, any liquid will suffice.I feel the temp. will be maintained longer than a sufficient quatity. In hot weather, the MINIMUM water intake is 8ozs. per 30 minutes.A big bottle could last a couple of hours, nothing to sneeze at as far as cycling time in heat.

They work great for me. I fill them 1/3 full and freeze on their side. Fill with water before I leave and it's all good.

Yup, that works great for me too. The one problem is that sometimes, unless it is very hot out, it stays too cold for it all to melt and your finish your ride with a big ice cube left in the bottle. You probably won't have that problem in Arizona, however.

No need. I live in Phoenix and it keeps stuff cooler longer. As posted above I've ridden with one normal bottle and one Polar and the Polar still has ice in while in the other one not only has the ice melted but the liquid has warmed up. All the post here have the right idea.

The Polar bottles carry as much fluid as a normal bottle(24oz), the bottle is just a little bigger.

Normal uninsulated bottle with ice lasts me 45 minutes in 90 to 100 F ambient temperatures. Half ice and drink in Polar lasts about 2 hours cold and gets to warm for my taste by hour 3 under the same conditions. I bought two of the smaller bottles when they first came out. The bottles logos’ were coming off on my hands during rides. Called Polar company and told them they might have a QA problem with the logo printing process. This did not affect the bottles ability to provide a cold drink. Polar sent my two new bottles. Nice company.

They work great for the hot and humid Texas summers.

Yep they work great. Have used them for a couple of summers here in FL.

And they come in many colors so you can be OCP compliant!

They do work although its not a spectacular difference.

If the water is warm by the time you're half-way through the bottle, you probably aren't drinking enough! I think a good rule is 1 bottle per hour on summer rides (and sometimes seriously more).

They work great for me as well. The only issue I find with them is that it's more difficult to clean the drink powder that gets lodged into the little dimples inside.

The LBS doesn't carry the full palette of colors, will need to order the correct color online.

I have one and, as mentioned above, with some ice and cold water at the start of the ride, I still have ice after 2 hours. I don't like that they are harder to squeeze water from (doesn't make as good a water cannon for dogs as a regular bottle) and the bottle is a bit larger in circumference, so it is a challenge to put it back in my Planet Bike carbon cages whilst riding.

Besides freezing or partially freezing, I also slip a cold, soaking wet, and clean, don't forget the clean, sock over my bottles in really not weather.
