I bought a couple pairs of the mid-level Voler shorts for $40 a crack. They are definitely better than the PI quest, arguably better than the attack but not as nice as the ultra sensor.

I dove in and bought my first pair of shorts yesterday (only been road cycling since January, putting about 420 miles on my bike amid the crappy weather). Picked up a pair of the Pearl Izumi Quest shorts for 48.99 at my LBS. It was a decision between the Specialized Sport shorts or these, both the same price. The Pearl shorts seemed a bit thicker, it had some little rubber grip bands at the end of the leg openings, the pad was 6 panel v 4, and the chamois felt a bit softer.
Got home, tossed them on, and strut around (less awkwardly then I imagined). My girlfriend thought it was funny; however, she found them quite sexy...I expected the giggles, but not her actually liking them
Grabbed my bike, went out the door and rode up a sizeable hill to campus (KU). After a real short ride (about 4 miles), I was really impressed with the overall feel. They didn't flap around, things didn't get in the way, the saddle felt instantly more comfortable, and I actually wasn't self conscious at all. Although maybe I should be.... (I'm 6'7", 175)....so, yeah...people look when I go by whether it's walking, driving, cycling (no matter what I'm wearing).
Anyway, even though these are my first shorts, and I only have a few miles on them....I'm SUPER impressed with the quality of them, the fit, the feel, and how they worked. I am going on a longer ride later tonight, so I'll really know how they work.
The Pearl izumi Quest get a thumbs up from me.

I really like the base model Santini's. They fit me well and come in at about $50 for bib shorts.

With a great saddle and center cutout, I've found that I don't need to wear padded shorts, which I think are mostly overpriced. If I do purchase another pair of padded shorts it would probably for appearances sake and not comfort. Regular stretch shorts without a pad work just as well.

OK, got the giordana silverlines today, took them on a 20 mile ride after work and the damn things felt great! the performance liquicells feel pretty good on rides, but I had no discomfort after 20 miles with the giordanas. I know 20 miles isn't very far, but for me, it's a pretty good indicator. will try some longer rides and see if there is any difference. But as for now, a big thumbs up for the giordanas.

The Giordana bibs just arrived. Unfortunately they have Giordana printed in 1 inch high white letters, going down the length of both legs. I am really not a big enough fan of this company to advetise their product so blatantly. This was not shown on the picture posted on the website.
I am the type that peels the stickers off his wheels. I am seriously thinking of returning them.

I'd go with the pearl izumi over the specialized. My PI's have held up for years. See if you can afford the attack short instead of the quest though.
