Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

kysrium Elites or Roval Classic Fusse??

So on my Specialized Roubaix Pro, I got the stock Roval Classic Fusee wheelset. I've put about 500 miles on it, and my last ride, I broke a spoke. So my local bike shop gave me a spare 2006 Kysrium Elite as a replacement till they can get my spoke ordered and fixed. This is a demo wheel. I asked them if they would consider a trade, my Rovals for the Elites. I love the way the elites look on the bike, but am a crazy for doing this trade. It seems that the Rovals are a few hundred dollars more brand new, but price of course does not always reflect quality. I looked on road bike review at reviews of the elites and it is just all over the board. Some say they need to get the elites trued constantly others say they have thousands of miles on the wheels and they are still as true as day 1. I do not race, just like to do charity rides and do about 100 miles per week. I weigh in at 195 right now, but have lost 30 pounds in the past two months and plan to lose at least 20 more. So what do you think should I make the trade? Not a lot of info out there about the Rovals as they are new wheels.

The wheelset with the funky star hub? If so, as a Mavic Elite owner, hell no. The star hubs are sexy.

No, no star hub, the regular aluminum rims. They are 8 or 9 hundred bucks retail....

My wheels are $600 retail and $400 street price. They weigh about 1800 grams. So far they have been stiff and true. I like the look of them but then again I don't have your 8-9 hundred dollar wheels.

Which one RIDES better???

I have Ksyrium Elites, weigh 195, and ride about 80-100 miles a week. I have had them for about 4 months and they are still perfectly true. I don't ride on pristine roads either.

I don't know about the Rovals but I have Elites on my Tarmac and except for a loose spoke that I had right after I bought the bike (same spoke loosened up three times till we used DT Swiss thread lock) they've been bulletproof. I'm a big guy at 6'2" and 215lbs so I'm thankful that they've been so reliable. As for your Rovals, my bike shop has three sets as demos and when I asked the owner about trying them out he recommended the Fusee which would seem to be a good endorsement. One thing to consider, you will see Elites on quite a few bikes but not so many Rovals. I kind of like the idea of being a bit different from everyone else.

Yeah, I hear ya about seeing the ksyriums on lots of bikes. I'm actually thinking about the Easton Orion II's now if they give me a good deal on a trade. I did a bit of research tonight and sound like good wheels for my type of riding\weight....

How do you like the performance and aerodynamics (particularly handling in wind) of these 2 wheels?

Anyone know anything about how either would do in racing? I'm slowly shopping around for something that performs better than my stock Shimano wheels, especially for sprinting and in windy conditions (not sure what they are, but they sure aren't DA..maybe 105s).
