Garmin Edge 305 battery?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shoot. I haven't had any issues at all with charging but I guess its back to the homemade solutions. Thanks for the info...

From the MotionBased forum

FYI:

I found some whitepapers on the Energi unit, and also emailed Energizer's engineering department. What I've found is that Energi does not output a steady 5V signal. It is a sawtooth that sweeps between 4.9V and 5.9V. <= very dirty by EE standards. Energi also has a 600mA output bound. Standard USB specs call for a steady signal with a 4.75-5.25V bound, 500mA max output.

I keep looking for a commercial 2AA boost device since I'm a bit lazy and don't want to break out the soldering kit and prefer professional looking products. MintyBoost, however, seems to be the only 2AA thing that follows USB spec and won't fry the garmin. Energizer's response to whether I could use the Energi with my iRiver mp3 player and Garmin Edge was pretty much "your devices are untested." I read that as "it might fry your electronics and we won't be responsible"
IIRC, it seems like people that fried their units with these non spec chargers did it while plugging the unit in while it was turned on.

Geez, you'd think that Garmin would step up an provide a Garmin specific product. They could even make money on it.

Should work but a MintyBoost is a heck of a lot cheaper.

Not a lot of technical info on it at APC's site but I'd say it probably works fine. As its a 10V battery and they're stepping it down, I'd think it would stay within USB spec.

Yea.. I looked at that. The Energizer charger claims to put out 5Vs as well. Its probably a safe choice tho. Poke around over on Motionbased and see if you can find anyone using one.

APC also sells a similar unit called the APC USB Battery Extender, they are about 15.00 and use regular aaa batteries.. I can't seem to find any specs on that one.. I'm going to be sure it works ok..

I will be doing some touring this summer and it will be nice to use the garmin for the whole trip, but I want to make sure there are no issues..

easy there tough guy . i just wanted some to explain to me the whole voltage thing and one of the million links you posted kind of does that. so thanks.

people have used the Energizer one with no issues. nobody is claiming it is designed for the Edge or will NOT fry the Edge. i have just seen more post of successful useage then not. everyone claims the minty is the way to go so i guess that is my option.

later.

This is what I use. Takes 4 AA batteries, alkaline or NiMh. I checked it with my meter to make sure it feeds 5V to the Garmin, which it does. I'm looking for a 6" usb cable to go with it. Somewhere I have 5 extra of these things in a box, brand-spanking-new, if anyone is interested. I've been using it for a couple of months now and it hasn't killed my Garmin.

This is the smart charger I use. I bought this specifically because I wanted a charger that I can leave the batteries in and it will keep them topped up without destroying the batteries. Has conditioning feature as well. Wasn't cheap though.

I have one of those sitting right here on my desk. It does not use a voltage regulator.

Thanks for the heads up on the smaller apc unit.. Looks like I will be getting the more expensive model.. I will let everyone know what I find out from the spec sheet.. I found 2 people on motionbased that are using this battery charger.. The nice thing is that it has multiple applications for other small battery based items I have..
