Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Few beginner questions.

Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to road cycling and have a few questions I was hoping to clear up with people smarter than I. First off, I purchased a Raleigh Technium over the weekend. I didn't realize it at the time, but when I'm riding hard my knees have a tendency to hit the gear levers, inadvertently changing gears, usually while going uphill. Is it possible to move the gears down from where they rest on the handlebar stem, or even to eventually place them on the brake levers themselves with a brake/shifter combo? That was my second question also, if its possible to put a brake/shifter combo on my bike? Lastly, are shimano ultegra 600 brakes any good? I found these https://cgi.ebay.com/Shimano-Ultegra-...QQcmdZViewItem
for sale on eBay, and I just wanted to know if they were any good...
thanks everyone, mike

Enjoy your Technium for what it is but don't spend your money trying to update it.

If you try to upgrade it what you are going to find out is that you can never change just one part on a bicycle. Everything works together so, everytime you put on a new part, you have to change something else to make it work. Eventually you'll have a Technium frame with a bunch of new parts for nearly as much as a new bike costs.

OP - Changing over to brake/shifter (brifter) gear on your bike is rather major surgery and fairly costly - probably not warranted on your Raleigh. You might be able to rig up downtube shifters without as much expense, but adding downtube shifters is a step back in time that doesn't make a lot of sense either, unless the 'knees-hitting-shifters' issue is insurmountable. As your experience level grows, you will undoubtably find MANY other things you'd like to upgrade, and the general rule of thumb is to start saving NOW for your next bike, rather than spending to upgrade the current one.

That bike must be too small for you. I don't see how someone could ride a bike and hit the shifters on the stem!

What size frame is it and what is your height and inseam?
