Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Malfunctioning Flight Deck (wireless computer)

My Shimano Flight Deck is acting up. I've eliminated the head unit as the source of the problem, because it works fine on my other bike. What happens is the screen flashes between mode screens whenever it is mounted on my Trek. Completely not responsive to any buttons. Put it on the Litespeed and it works fine.

Had the same problem the first time I installed the unit. Traded the mounting harness back to the store for another one, which fixed the prob. Now acting up again.

Anyone get this prob before -- flashing back and forth between screens? Any fix other than replacing the mounting kit..again?

I had multiple problems with the wireless FD unit in the two years I had it running on my Merlin (10 Speed D-A). Curiously, I have a wired FD on my Lemond (9 Speed D-A) that has run flawlessly for almost 7 years. Turns out the issue on the wireless was with the contact points by the trigger buttons. They had become corroded from sweat. LBS replaced the contacts and fixed the issue, but it has happened twice in two years. I have a theory that the 10 speed groupo is more susceptible to the sweat penetration. Try pealing pack the hood and give it a real close inspection.

No longer a problem for me as I switched to the Garmin Edge this fall.

I had issues with my flightdeck not reading the gears correctly (or at all rather) and it came down to the connectors in the brifters not making contact correctly - I could push the buttons, but the data was all haywire. I Gorilla glued them in place so they're making contact securely, and it's been flawless ever since.
