Pearl Izumi: Ultrasensor or Microsensor?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pearl Izumi: Ultrasensor or Microsensor?

I am interested in hearing anyones opinion that has worn both of these shorts and can give comparison of them. I am wondering if the Microsensor's are worth the extra few dollars?

Thanks for your input.

I have the Microsensor's and like them very much. I want to get a pair of the bib shorts with the same 3D chamois in it. I don't know anything about the Ultrasensor so can't really comment on them but if you want to save a few bucks compare the chamois in both and see what feels better to you.

+1 For the microsensors, but like the above poster, I have not tried the ultrasensors. So I cant fully answer your question on whether the micros are worth the extra money. They are nice shorts though, definitely. I tried on both the micros and the ultras, and the micros seemed to fit me better.
Good luck!

I did the budget short thing and want to get something better. I am never going to be the Assos kind of person, too spendy for me. Looking under $100, the PI microsensor seem decent. In hand, the chamois feels substanstial. The ultrasensor chamoiss is actually thicker, but does this mean its more comfortable given the lower price? I was wondering whether that thicker chamois squishes down more?

I have the microsensors and they are perfect, great fit and super comfy. Extremely well made.
I use them for longer rides, but for shorter ones I just use the Pearl Izumi attack shorts, which are well made and great fitting as well, but the chamois is not as comfy.

I have both and they are both nice. In fact, on longer rides I actually double up and wear them both.

:broken record: assos.

otherwise, try: etxe ondo, descente, hincapie, nalini, giordana...

10-15 years ago PI was a great company, but they seemed to have lost the plot sometime in the late 90s (probably when they had their financial problems).

I like the Microsensor chamois better than the ultra. I have the Micro bibs, and the ultra shorts, and while they both seem fine I prefer the thinner, denser foam of the "3D Pro" or whatever it's called in the Microsensors. It seems more comfortable to me, and also doesn't feel as much like a diaper when I happen to be off the bike (or on it.)

I have only used the ultra and I find them comfortable. I do really like a thinner chamois so perhaps next shorts purchase will be the microsensor.

I have considered descente and giordana. I guess PI is an easy goto name because they are more readily available in stores. Anything specific in those two brands you recommend $100 and under? I am looking for shorts, not bibs.

Thanks.

i have one pair of each. The microsensors are slightly more comfortable, and they have a draw string, which I like. I probably wouldn't pay the difference if I were paying list price. I got the microsensors on Ebay for less than I paid for the ultrasensors.

On a side note I received a pair of Cannondale Domestique shorts from STP, and the fit and fabric are much better than the PI shorts. But I prefer the PI chamois.

I have the ultra bibs and other than the massive camel toe they give me (they ladies love it), I love em. I can ride hours in them and never get sore. Ive never had to use cream with them either and never chafe. I don't know if its just my leathery hide, or due to the bibs. Just an observation.

I only have experience with PI over the last year, but it has been very positive. Perhaps they have improved recently? My PI items have all been very robust, and all products have fit quite nicely (aside from the oft-mentioned issue of PI usually running a size larger -- labeled smaller -- than most other brands). The only caveat I can think of is that my aerosensor chamois, while comfy, is a bit too thin for century-ish rides.

What drives me nuts about this forum is when you post a specific question people will always tell you to try a different brand. Thats not what the OP is asking.

The new ' 07 microsensor have 10mm of thickness throughout as opposed to the 8mm in the front as the '06 models had. The microsensors are shorts for guys or gals who have a well seasoned sit bones. They also use Eschler (high end) fabric on the chamois.

The 07 Ultrasensors use the elite chamois and is dual density with 3mm layer combined with a 9mm layer. = 12 mm chamois

Hope this helps!
