RAIN (Ride Across Indiana) Early Start?
Hi all,
I chatted with some of you here last year before I did my first RAIN ride. Loved that heat!
Anyway, my mom who is 65 was my sag. She was duly inspired by all and started cycling in hopes of riding this year.
Her main concern is not the mileage (we still do ultra running events on trails) since she has the endurance. It's meeting the 14 hr time limit.
Does anyone know if some riders start early or if that's a possibility for slower riders?
Thanks....see ya in a few weeks in W. Terre Haute! Crystal

There are riders who start early, but they are the ones that would usually spend the first bit of the ride passing everyone anyway.
If she has the endurance, and has her bike fit dialed in then she most likely won't have a problem finishing in the 14 hours. Remember that the route is West to East usually meaning a modest tailwind. The RAIN ride is my longest ride of the year, but it is also usually my fastest century+ ride.
Also check out the regional forum for rides in your area to help with training. Come out and meet us for a century or two...

She will have to average 12.5 mph for 13 hours if she averages stopping 15 minutes per sag(4) and 13.5 mph for 12 hours if her stops average 30 minutes. Can she maintain those averages for that length of time is the question! If she cannot make that time maybe the ride is too ambitious for her this year or ever and she maybe should not try it. She can have fun cycling without doing the RAIN!

With a tail wind, I think she would be fine. The light headwind yesterday dropped my average about 2 mph, with a strong headwind, the RAIN would really suck. I think it's awesome she is riding and think she will do great!
