Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I need suggestions for a trainer.

I'd like to get a trainer for indoor riding but I have no clues as to which ones are good and which ones are not. I need some input.
Thanks.

I've seen a few models. Tell me what you think.

I have a 1upUSA and it has been great for 3+ years. Just to throw another option in the mix.

It's not cheap, but it is quiet, sets up fast, and has lots of resistance.

Personally, I would not get a trainer the has a tension adjustment, like your 2nd picture. I like the idea of using your gears, just like on the road.

Picked up a CycleOps 2 Fluid from https://www.modernbike.com/itemgroup....174975&TID=367 for $223 with free shipping. Can't go wrong with that price, when a lot of junky trainers sell for more. Just need it to arrive.

+1. Only regret - trainers are boring.

Ive had cheap trainers (REALLY loud, eats up tires, not worth it at all), expensive ones (1up usa) which was good, and finally a Kurt Kinetic. Much smoother/realistic resistance, quiet, very nice. Mine is the rock and roll that actually rocks back and forth to bridge the gap between rollers and trainer. Its cool, but I would probably just get the normal kurt kinetic - under $300 (look on ebay too).

Yeah, the cycle-ops rollers do get kinda noisy at 100+ RPMs. As for stability, I haven't ridden anything else to know what's me, and whats the rollers. My only point of comparison is that they're mag trainer loud at anything more than about 250 watts.

What is your budget?

Have used the Minoura Mag and Balckburn Ultra and like them both. ALL trainers will eat your tires. Get a cheapo set or better a rear wheel/cassette with cheapo tire for trainer use.

I have a rim-drive minoura left over from my mountain bike days that i use with my roadie and it's great. No tire-wear to worry about. But it does worry me that more people don't use rim-drive on their roadies...am I missing something?

Sure. I guess I'm just worried I'll fall flat on my face with rollers. But I guess I can learn. I've heard they are good for developing balance and good pedaling skills.
Thanks.

Honestly my budget was $100.00. I was trying to use some birthday gift money for this, but it looks like I'll have to pony up some money of my own. But if it's worth the extra I don't mind spending a little more.

I have experience only with the Kurt Kinetic, but I can tell you it does have a good road feel, it's quiet, and it'll never leak fluid.

Hmm. Looks like this might not be such a good investment after all.

well you're in FL I would die to have conditions like this to ride in! I certainly wouldnt be looking for something to keep me inside, but that's just me. I think youd get more out of riding with your wife if you guys invested in a sitter once a week where she could join you. Just sayin'.
time outside together will beat time inside on a trainer hearing the baby crying next door

Yeah that's true. I guess sometimes an idea seems good until you get good feedback from others who've used what your looking for. Thanks. You probably just saved me alot of money I could invest somewhere else.

Road Machine. It's the fluid trainer. What sold me (besides the leak-proof nature of it) is that it's calibrated so that the wattage necessary to achieve a speed on the road is the same wattage needed to achieve the same speed on the trainer.

Newb question here about trainers...how do they attach to the wheel...is it a problem if you have quick release? And can they be used with a mountain bike with knobby tires?

I use the time to catch up on podcasts. They keep me occupied but not so occupied I can't complete my intervals.

Florida - indoor trainer??

I have a cycleops 2, works great, hear the warranty is really good in case of leakage (I've never had a problem). But trainers are really dull dull dull.

Rollers usually get the vote on this forum, keep things exciting
