Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When can you get paid?

I hear a lot of people talking about racing and their cats, but at what level is there money to be made? I've heard cat 2s can make some cash. For me riding is for the exercise and enjoyment, I was just curious when competitive riders can earn money, and how much they can earn.

If you're asking out of curiosity, carry on.

If you're asking about actually MAKING money, I don't think it can be done even in cat 2. Your food money is going to go way up...

At Cat 4, I was "making" the same as the Cat 1 & 2 people. If I won, I'd come home with $10. If they won, they'd come home with $10. $10 was usually the biggest prize, but one year, at one crit, I won $100. That year I "made" $150 at cycling. It was a good year.

At ANY level. How much do you think most TdF racers make? I think being a domestique would be a pay cut for most professionals.

Well, of course! Bike racing isn't exactly a lucrative career. Anything I won went into paying for the fuel to get to the races, and if there was some left over, maybe I'd buy something new for my bicycle.

You'd probably make more if you took up gardening and sold the produce at the local farmer's market.

Our biggest local race pays $15,000, total, for all the races/categories combined for the weekend. To make a living, you would have to (1) have a sponsor that covers your expenses, and (2) win in Pro-1 in more than one event for the weekend, and (3) win at that level at three or four similar-level events every month during the cycling season. And you would have to live fairly cheaply.

Pro racers in the U.S. aren't making a living off the purses.

Of course, if you have a day job, you would have to report every dollar you received from cycling. (And, hopefully, you would also report your expenses and avoid all taxes.)

Makes me wounder if it's possible to claim cycling as a side business that is consistently operating at a loss. You could even get a write-off this way

Oh good. After that copyright laws debate, I was hoping we could have a tax-law debate.

FYI, I think the 3 in 5 rule/guideline would still apply, and seeing as auto-racing is looked upon disfavorably by the IRS, I think the tax-man would laugh at your 'business'.
