Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Carnac shoes: velcro separating

I have a pair of Carnac road shoes that I love but I'm having a problem with the velcro detaching from the straps in hot weather. Has anyone had this problem?

I tried some 3M automotive trim adhesive that I had lying around on the worse offender. It sticks great, until it's 90F out and sunny.

I had this problem, and solved it by putting new velcro on the straps.

Yes. SuperGlue worked for me. The strap is a little less flexible, but it doesn't detract from function in my case.

This happened some time ago on my Legend/LeMonds during the time that Sinclair Imports was the importer. Sent them back, fixed quickly and that was that. Oschner is now the importer, contact them and see what happens. If that does not work, did you check out a local shoe repair place?

I also had this problem, and I fixed it just as Jonathan Drake did, with new velcro. Easy and perfect. I forget where I got the velcro, maybe an Office Max, or Walgreen's, or some such place.

I did that too, and I applied the glue in strips side to side across the strap. That lets it flex and wrap around the foot. It worked well.

Thanks guys. I thought superglue would be too stiff. A shoe place sounds like a smart idea too. FWIW, my straps have no stitching at all. They were only glued in place.

Follow-up:

I thought that the strap I used the 3M adhesive had come apart again but it seems I can't tell my left from my right. It turns out the 3M ahesive seems to work well. Close to 90F racing this past Sunday with no problems. The product I used to reattach the velcro was "3M Fast Tack Trim Ahesive", available at an autoparts store near you.

At the risk of sounding like a complete moron, you guys have found you can strip off the velcro from the strap? Any tips for this? I have a pair of Pearl Izumi's with velcro that has gotten so fuzzy they won't stay strapped any more.

My Carnac Quartz did the same thing; very poor construction for such an expensive shoe. I tried the glue thing and it didn't work. I switched brands.

Well, on my shoes it happened all by itself after a few hours in the sun. They stuck again after cooling off but I could still easily pull the velcro off. The shoes are (I'm guessing) 7 or 8 years old.
