Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

what do you do when the helmet pads fall apart?

i find that by 6-12 months of use, the pads on the inside of a helmet will fall apart and won't stay in place anymore...what do you do? just take them out and go without them? or is there a way to get or make replacements very cheaply?

i searched and couldn't find anything relevant, but others must have had this problem...

The helmets that I have bought in the past have come with replacements. You may be able to contact whoever makes your helmet about replacement pads. I had a similar issue and just stole some pads out of a spare helmet my dad had laying around and stuck them in mine. He has about 10 spare helmets so im sure they won't be missed.

You can get self adhesive velcro dots to keep them in place. You could try an uphostery shop for scrap fabric to cut new pads from. There are lots of foam backed fabrics.

I wear a Bell Sweep R and when my forehead pad died I just contacted Bell directly and they sent me new replacements.

FOR FREE.

Pretty cool, those Bell folks.

Yeah, contact the manufacturer. They'll probably hook you up, or charge a few dollars at worst. They want you to be happy with their helmet so when you do buy you buy theirs again.

++, just write to their customer support. I've gotten several sets of replacement pads this way.

Even if your helmet is not a Bell, it's worth a try.

I got a free set of replacement pads for my Giro helmet last year - I think I emailed customer support. It took a while, but eventually a new set showed up in the mail.

Actually, the new ones are already coming apart - the backing that hooks to the velcro is delaminating from the foam padding. Rather than wait another month or something for new ones (again,) I tried some 3M Super Adhesive spray to stick 'em back together - working great so far!

No they aren't. Same thing happened to me and they sent me to my local Bell dealer who then charged me $12 for a few tiny pieces of foam, that then collapsed again after a few months.

pfft.

You get up and KILL. Devour the brains of the living.

Or, if you don't feel like leading a zombie revolt, you buy a new helmet. Something a little higher-end.

But dude- my vote is for zombie revolt.

The ensuing pics you post will be much more entertaining than whatever new lid you end up with.
