Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cable covers...

When my LBS assembled my bike, they installed a vinyl (or whatever) sleave on my rear brake cable.
What function, if any does this sleave have?

I feel silly askin'...

The cable cover is there to provide tension to the cable, so that your brake functions. I'm oversimplifying but you get the idea.

decrease wear between the cable and the frame I would suppose.

ON my Merlin, the rear brake cable would ring like a bell against the frame on bumps. ( I actually would pluck it for a bell.) until I put little rubber donuts on the cable.

I don't hink theOP is talking about the cable housing, but rathe a little clear sleeve between the stops where the cable has no housing.
