Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Starting fixed?will it help

Ok so I have a Specialized langster, many upgrades. Its great for zipping around town and for shorter rides,im thinking about getting a geared bike probably next season,my question is: if I continue to ride it and do longer rides will this help me out a good amount when I start riding a greared bike?

I say it will. I ride both and I feel it has helped me out immensely.

It won't hurt as long as you're geared properly, but I doubt it'll make any difference one way or the other.

That depends on how hilly it is where you live and what gearing you choose. If you have climbs available to you then a 70-75 gear inches will help you gain strenght esp. if you get up off the saddle.
Going downhill will teach you how to pedal high cadence (you have little choice in this matter )

If you live in a flat area you could still run this gearing to work on your spin or go up to 80" for more speed, but make sure you run a brake cuz you can't stop this gear with backpedalling w/o blowing out your knees.

I'd say that riding fixed has helped my geared riding but only because it helped me fix bad habits developed over the years.

I ride both. I think the fixed has definitely improved my strength, high speed cadence, and overall technique.

I ride both as well-- the fixed riding definitely helps on hills-- I am a lot stronger on hills than I was before. Also, when I ride the geared bike I tend to use my leg speed to go faster--often forgetting that I can actually shift up

It also has helped me spin more-- all in all, it helps a lot.
