Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Jamis Road bikes

Hey everybody,

So, I had never heard of Jamis bikes until I went to a new bike store in my town that I didn't know existed. It turns out that it's probably the best shop we have around here, and they are big on Jamis for "entry level" ($1000ish) road bikes.

Is Jamis a good brand? The model I tried in the store was a Ventura Elite, which would be $1300. The other main contender for my new road bike is a Trek 1500 for $1100. They share the same group set (Shimano 105), but the Jamis has some nicer features, like carbon seat post and seat stays.

What's your opinion? I'm leaning toward the Jamis right now, partially because of the 3 years of free tune ups that this bike shop offers over the measly 6 months of the shop that sells Trek in town.

Thanks,

Tom

If you really want you can go to Las Vegas and talk to someone down there. One of the bike shops down there was rated as one of the top 10. But I cannot remember which one. It might be worth the 3 hour drive.

I went to my LBS and rode about 6 road bikes (being very ignorant about them) and the last one that they let me ride was a Jamis Aurora. It was really great. Compared to the other bikes I tried, this one rode like a cruiser with how soft and non-jarring it was. I'd really like to get one, but am going to try to get a beater until I'm comfortable enough to drop the 750 they're asking for.

That's great information. As to the second link, I wish they carried my size, because that's a sweet deal!

Thanks for the information, everybody. I'm seriously considering making the Jamis my new bike.

Tom,

Hi! I love my Jamis Coda Elite ('05) as an urban hotrod.

I think all Jamis bikes are a good value, and I recently tested a Quest (sweet ride). I was seriously considering the Eclipse, but an aging body convinced me that custom might be the surest way to minimize pain.

Still, reviews of Jamis bikes always mention the great value and how the ride qualities rival bikes costing more.

Good luck!

Dave

Thanks for the info, Dave! It sounds like Jamis is definitely the way to go. I just compared the Ventura Elite to the Trek 2200, a bike $300+ more expensive, and they are pretty comparable, other than the price.

I'm going to think it over and probably go get fitted for one at the LBS tomorrow! weee

my riding buddy in college had a jamis back in like 88 (a mtb bike) and it was a nice frame back them. that was 20 years ago, they're still at it and have to be one of the most underrated brands out there. i think their top of the line carbon frame right now looks super nice.

Jamis is a freaking Communist who should have been shipped back to North korea a long time ago.

Or am I thinking of someone else?

Jamis rocks

Much better bikers than I recommend Jamis. I have a 2006 Quest and it rides as well as any other bike I've ever ridden. Light, quick, stable and comfortable. You'll love it.
