Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dang. Here in Seattle the worst I've ever seen is blueberry sized - and that only on one or two occasions and briefly at that.

Here on the upper great plains cherry tomatoe sized isn't uncommon.

While flying into Denver 3-4 yrs. ago, I looked down and thought that I was losing my mind. For miles east of the airport, everything was covered in white - but it was mid-summer. Finally my brain snapped into gear and I realized - that's a hail of a lot of ice! I've experience car damaging hail in OH & NJ too.

Usually found in the same place. Both require a great deal of atmospheric energy.

A hailstorm in Sydney in 1999 is Australia biggest ever insurance payout - something >$1.5 billion, which is bigger than any of the hurricanes or bush fires or floods. More than 20,000 homes damaged and 40,000 cars. Thousands of new cars were sold cheaply due to panel damage and the fact that panel beaters were booked out for months. There was a shortage of tilers across Australia for a few months as they all went to Sydney to earn the big buck fixing roofs.

It was definitely very uncommon for this area. Typically, hail is marble to quarter in size when it does hail. This was a very small pocket of large hail ranging, according to our local news, in size from golf ball to lemon size hail. I saw the hordes of hail on the ground all around my location shortly after it began subsiding and I was totally beside myself. Again, that was a very scary experience!

They're pretty common there in late July/August. Hell breaks loose for 45 minutes or so and then all is well. I've never seen hail anywhere near that size in Denver, though. Have seen golf ball sized stuff in Florida; not something I'd want to ride through.

No kidding. I've lived in that area most of my life, and I can't ever remember seeing hail like that. Glad I didn't leave my car out that day...
