Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Converting triple to double

I have a Shimano 2200 triple on my road bike, which I'm pretty sure is square taper. There's a good deal going for an old Shimano 600 square taper double, and I'm wondering if I need a new BB to make it work. Is the difference in BB center to outer ring made by the crank itself or by the length of the BB?

Thanks!

You'll surely need a bottom bracket with a shorter spindle.

So there's no difference in center to big ring distance between a double and triple crank? Hmm...

Is there an easy way to know which size BB I need?

Thanks!

The crank is the most important factor in determining what BB spindle length you need. If you buy a new crank or a NOS crank, the seller should be able to recommend a BB spindle length.
