Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wife crashed today... WEAR THAT HELMET!

Out for normal recovery ride today....very light ride with my wife after my training ride. 5 miles in on a seemingly normal road at only 12 miles an hour I hear a short scream and a "SLAP" behind me only to turn and see my wife down. Long story short, she was knocked out for about 45 seconds. 3 CHP, a fire truck, amulance ride later a ct scan revealed a mild concussion. Her helmet(a Trek WSD model) cracked in 3 places but did it's job. Things could have been immensely worse. I am not the preachy type and have never posted this site until now, but today has changed me regarding helmet use. Those who always do spread the word, those who are on the fence please take a second to think, if not for yourself, for those who love you, because in the blink of an eye it can all be gone. Thanks for listening.

Incredible. Thanks for posting. That helmet was a lottery ticket and your wife cashed in today. Here's wishing for a quick recover.

glad she is without serious injury. very glad. here in so cal, on the news there was a report that a 50-ish year old male biker was on some 10k ride and began weaving (not on purpose) and clipped the tire of a truck, went down, and died.

was it a car that hit your wife?

No car involved, I believe, after a little investigation, she drove her front tire into a crevace between where the cement curbing is poured and the asphalt is layed. As she tried to save that, I think she ended up turning hard right into the curb and the rest is history. Again, today was to be as enjoyable as every other ride we have gone on. It's hard to believe life can possibly be changed that quickly. I have been riding for years and have had close calls with cars before. NEVER in my wildest would have ever thought this would have happened the way it did. Thanks!

I hope your wife recovers well. I'm going to buy my wife a new bike soon, think I'll get her a new helmet as well. Thanks for the word of warning.

I know exactly what you mean; a couple of weeks ago I was riding along one of the local bike paths, and hit a root/pot-hole or something, and the next thing I knew I was on the ground; it happened so fast that I don't remember the exact details. My bike is OK; there's a slight graze on the saddle, mirror smashed. I had a couple of cuts and grazes, but have healed. My helmet split… (could have been my head!); I've been riding for the past 50+ years and that's the first time I've ever totalled a helmet (here are a couple of pics).

PS: I hope your wife is OK.
