Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

138 mile week

My first week with a road bike and I rode 138 miles.

My arm is aching but that's from patting myself on the back.

I like my new bike.

You can do it, man.

It was only a few weeks ago that I was struggling to complete 15 miles in one stretch.

Keep them pedals turning!

Great news; another road bike convert.

I started back riding in March after a serious accident last December when an SUV turned in front of me, and I have been doing 100 miles plus a week since.

My accident taught me a valuable lesson; stay alert, and ride defensively. Incidentally I started riding a road bike in 1951.

Congratulations! In a while 100 won't be enough. Then 200. Then 300.
It never stops.

I am averaging 100 miles weeks as well. Last week was 102. It feels great!

Good job guys and/or gals. It's pretty amazing when you start to ride distances that people would get tired driving. I've now got more miles in my legs than most cars can handle. You'll keep building on it -- then you'll get addicted. 100 miles/week is substantial -- I'm racing on that mileage.

Very nicely done. Now the real challenge is to keep it up!

100 is perfect for me too. A great feeling, each mile seems to erase a little bit of stress at a time.

Thanks.

My problem may be keeping the mileage down, I'd ride all day if they'd let me.

I'm working on getting my base miles down before hitting some intervals and hills.
Maybe a race or two before the end of the year.

Congrats. Well done.

100 miles/week is a great milestone.

I still use it as my training gauge.

It's funny you should say that. I know I'm overdue for an extended ride when I start feeling more irritable and cranky than usual. This last weekend had its high and low points, but yesterday was primarily low with the wife and kids. The weather was SPECTACULAR and I desperately needed to get out. Due to family stuff I wasn't able to be out for long, but 90 minutes and 28 miles consisting of a healthy mix of flats, rollers, and steep hills, and the stress of the day was almost entirely gone.

Cycling is freakin' theraputic, I tell ya!

+1 - I missed a metric that I was planning on riding last week and ended up in a fight with my wife resulting in me not talking to her for over 24 hrs. Not good. Rode a solo unsupported imperial century on Satuday and all is well again....

Speaking of LONGER rides, how does everyone feel afterwards? I regularly do about 130 miles a week, (5 commutes and one 30 miler on the w/e) This past Saturday I did a solo 70 miler, averaging 19 mph. I felt great all the way and for 2 hours or so afterwards, I had this glow on. Didn't feel like doing too much. So I didn't. Then I sort of came back to Earth and got on with the day.
