Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

buying a new bicycle

HI i am looking to buy a new road bike and was wondering which you think is a better bike. I am looking at a 2006 giant TCR composite 1 for $2,000 or the Crevelo solioist team for $2,300. Is there any other bikes in this range that you would recomend. thank you for your help.

Way too many in that range to list, but here's a few:

Scott CR1 Team
Bianchi 928
Pinarello Galileo
Felt F4

Also if you like the Cervelo but are looking for a carbon bike, these people are advertising 2006 Cervelo Soloist Carbons for $2300

Answering "better bike" is a VERY subjective thing and we all have opinions and typically will go with either what we already have or *wish* we had!

All major brands .. and most of the less major brands ... will have offerings in that price range. Test ride ... narrow them down to 2 or 3 ... and then go with your gutt ... or your favorite color.

Have fun!

I have owned the Cervelo for a year and a half and am extremely pleased with the bike. If you do any racing, this is a phenomenal bike. If you are looking for a bike for long distance or century rides, this may not be the bike for you. The geometry is fairly aggressive, and it has a lively feel. If you decide on the Cervelo, I recommend buying the carbon seat post over the aluminum one. I have not ridden the Giant, but one of my team mates rides one and loves it. The best advice is to ride both (if you can), set up as identically as possible, and make your decision from there.

I guess my point was that there are more comfortable bikes out there if your thing is distance or just riding for fun. The bike is designed more for speed than comfort. I actually did a double century on mine last year and felt great afterwards.(as great as you can feel after 200 miles) As I mentioned it is a fairly agressive geometry, and that is not necessarily synonymous with comfort. I never said it was not good for century rides. My opinion is simply that it is engineered for speed more than comfort. I happen to love mine and have put 8,000 miles on the frame in a year and a half.
