Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: Specialized Sirrus - 2000?

Stupid Math Question

I know this is an easy calculation, but my brain doesn't seem to be able to get it right. I just went 17.34 miles in 64 minutes and I want to get my average speed. I know it's not really fast, but I did have to stop (well, trackstand - no feet touched the ground) 6 times for lights and stop signs.

Every time I try to do the math I end up with a stupid answer, so can someone tell me the correct calculation.

It's a new build and I haven't put a cheap 'puter on it yet.

16.26 mph

Divide the mileage by the time then multiply by 60 to get av. mph.

16.26mph

64 minutes / 60 minutes per hour = 1.0666.... hours

17.34 miles / 1.0666 hours = 16.26 miles / hour

The library has books on math.... and on trolls.

v=dx/dt
= (xf-xi)/(tf-ti)
= (17.34mile - 0 )/ ((64min-0)/60min/hour)) = 16.26mph

Thank you. I promise it wasn't a troll question. My brain was simply missing the last step.

You'd be surprised at how few math books there are in a Law Library.

Sorry, you may now return to your usual programming.

So, you guys couldn't round up to 16.26 from 16.25625?

I get no respect! Probably don't deserve it right now.

Obviously I'm having a bad brain day. To little coffee, maybe.

Anyway, I now see ALL of you rounded up, and I'm simply a moron today.

Thank you, and sorry.

Nice equation Enthalpic.

Remember, if you ever have children, https://mathforum.org/dr.math/
Dr. Math got me thru Algebra I with my daughter. However, it was a total bust on Geometry. It was then that she realized I didn't know everything. It has been downhill ever since.

How is it so accurate?

I don't know how you came up with such a percise distance without a computer. Because if your estimating anyway then why the need to be so precise? If you used someone elses odometer unless you followed the same line precisely then your calcuations are going to be off either way.

I think you just need help with your sister's math homework, didn't you?

The answer is simple. I have done the distance many times - most of which were on my Calfee with a Garmin 305 Edge. So, I know the exact distance well.

Today, on my new build, I used the timer function on my watch to measure the total time - it was actually 1:03:46 - I rounded up.

I don't have a sister, and I'm probably old enough to be your father, Punk!

Thank you, my daughter is about to turn 10, and I think I'll need this.

Well if you know the EXACT distance, then you have no idea what your time was. (physics joke)

You have four significant figures for your distance measurement and only two for your time measurement so it would be wrong to report your AVS as anything but 16 mph

64 min is 16/15 hrs. Multiply both it and the speed (17.34) by 100 to facilitate mental math.

1734/(1600/15) = 1734*15/1600

26010 (take 17340 and add its half, 8670)/1600

16 remainder 410/1600

Round off to 16.25 because there's a stoplight ahead.
