Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Steepest hill (pittsburgh)

well, my bro and i set out today and found the steepest hill in pittsburgh...we dominated it! it's not that long at all, maybe a little over a quarter mile long...either way, we climbed the steepest hill in pittsburgh...it's a 37% grade...the cobble stone section kinda sucked...anyway here are some pics

Lets find it in TopoUSA and get vital stats...

The pave definitely adds a measure of complexity...

Brick shows through some of the older streets here in SF and makes me wish they were all that way, atleast aesthetically.

It's more than fifty yards, but it is relatively short.

The woman in the second house up is 95 years old. I was chatting with her one day, and she started talking about the mayor stopping by before they 'paved' the road. I asked her when that was... she answered, oh, 194X or so.

The pics don't really do it justice.

TopoUSA says...

Canton Ave between Coast and Hampshire Ave is avg 10% grade with max of 15% grade (463 ft long)...

Canton Ave from Hampshire Ave to dead end is avg 11% grade with max of 17% grade (479 ft long)...

Hampshire Ave from Canton to Alverado is avg grade 13% with max of 14% grade (461 ft long)...

I don't know which it is but all are pretty steep...

Wait...

I found a Bayonne Ave to Alverado which is just north of Canton Ave with avg grade of 24% with a max of 31% (420 feet long)...

31% max grade is sick...

You need to hit all the other climbs that they do in the Dirty Dozen (https://www.dannychew.com/dd.html#anchor002)

Mount Washington in Pittsburgh has a wicked hill....they used to race it in pro Thrift Drug Classic where Lance got his start, to this day he still says that was tough.

Awesome climbing but I sure dont think it is really a 30 percent grade. I know pictures dont do it justice but where did you get your numbers from? Looks like about a 15-18% to me, which is still a bear although looks kinda short.

Ok, after looking at this photo I changed my mind, boy a little perspective goes a long way. I raise my glass in salute to your climb.

From the map PP posted it looks like it is Canton Ave from Coastal to Hampshire Ave...

TopoUSA is known not to be 100% accurate...

It’s the steepest street in this hilly town and, probably, the region, with a grade of 37 percent — that is, rising 37 feet per 100 feet of run. So confirm records from the city Department of Engineering and Construction.

Survey Says:
X

I've been on it, it's WAY more than 10%, or even 17%. It doesn't hold that grade for long, but while it does, it's impressively steep.

It is steep enough for the cobles to attempt to fall down the hill. Imagine trying to go downhill in the center of that road!

Using TopoUSA for anything other then amusement purposes is pretty pointless.
