Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Deep Section Rims and Wind

I am interested in real world experience on Deep section rims (40 mm or greater) and wind, particularly cross winds. Further, I am interested in riders who routinely ride deep section rims in continually windy areas (places where a normal day is 15-20 mph windspeed and "windy" is when it kicks up to 35-45 mph -- you know who your are).

I have lived in non-windy areas, and I have lived in windy areas, so I know the difference, and I am curious if any ambitions of getting deep-section rims for riding on the Upper Great Plains would just be a foolish waste of money.

Thanks!

I've been hit by a 40mph gust before but I saw the billowing dust up ahead so I was braced for it and I still got knocked a good half lane over with my 46mm deep rims. Had I not been paying attention, a good lane over would've definitely been possible.

Given that, I'm about a buck 40 give or take 5.

During a TT, I was using a very deep profile carbon front wheel with 3 really wide blades, and even the slightest gust made me think I was going to fall. I can't imagine how Pedro Delgado ran double disc's on the prologue of the '89 tour in serious wind.

San Bruno is one of the three wind tunnels that blow through the Bay Area and I'm frequently battling cross winds with my 43mm Spinergys. Just remain relaxed but firm and the wind will blow around you. You do have to compensate in the steering but don't overcorrect. I never feel uncomfortable in the winds.

I feel like I need to bump this just to see if there are any others out there frequently running deep section or even 30mm+ rims in the wind, or do you swap out the deep profiles for some old box sections on windy days?

I've been amazed at how minimally my Zipp 404's are affected by wind. Granted, Maryland isn't the windiest place on Earth, but I'd say that the 404's are only marginally more sensitive than my Fulcrum 1's.

Rim shape has more to do with the tugging that you will get in a crosswind. First generation Campy Shamals are some of the best out there in that regard.

I ride older Spinery Rev X Super Stiffs... I used 60mm valve stems, so they've got to be a 50 mm dish...

I ride them everyday, and even on windy days, I don't have problems. You learn to ride a little looser. Yes you still get blown around a bit, but not an extreme amount more than a low dish. I don't even really think about it anymore.

I use my old spinergy wheels all the time. They do catch the wind in a decent gust but it's all fun. My mate rides these, and has a few problems.

It's sucks.

If you are going to be around other riders or cars just don't do it. You'll be a danger to yourself and others.

If you are by yourself why would you bother? Unless you are really fast it's not going to be that much of any improvement when the wind isn't in front of you yet you're going to be stuck fighting the wheel all the time. Since absolute speed is meaningless why have a less pleasant ride.

I laugh everytime I see someone sporting 404s around here in heavy winds. It's like watching a pinball game.

Well it's funny until they want to join your line.....
