Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Plus, if you are riding really hard and are too nauseated to eat it, you can always give yourself a bananema. You'll still get the electrolytes that way.

i tried the shot blocks once. can't say i'm a fan. if they get warm at all they get all kinds of stuck all over your mouth.

big fan of the peanut butter crunch clif bars myself. i don't find them too sweet but they are a pain to chew/swallow when you're riding; too dry. i think i may switch to PBJ.

Clif Bars taste OK, but only when fresh. Even when there is 6 months left before the expiration date, Clif bars start to taste stale.

I try a little of everything to have a variety, but when it really comes down to it my number one food are Payday candybars. They hold up well when hot, have a decent amount of saltiness to them, offset by a bit of sweet but not too much. They also seem to provide me with a "full" feeling so my stomach isn't complaining the entire ride.

Hammer products have changed my cycling nutrition radically. They are a huge change from everything else out there. I highly suggest you try them. Not sweet like the other stuff.

I like taking wheat bagels along - they're nicely bland compared to my sweet hydration drink.

I've been anti the cliff bars lately too. On my last big ride I brought fig newtons and a PB & J sandwich. Both are sweet, but less like a candy bar.

Thing is I cut out sugar almost completely a couple of years ago and even a PB+J or Fig Newton tastes unbearably sweet to me.

Plus PB gives me stomach ache, I love it though

I tried this one bar called a Haley's Comet or something like that, not sweet but kinda gingery/spicy and less calories than most bars.

McDonalds double cheeseburger from the dollar menu. Sure...it's not good for you. But it has lots a fuel to get through a long haul and it'll make you feel guilty enough for eating it that you'll make the haul even longer.

Salted onigiri wrapped in nori making it easy to handle.
In Japan, we're never too far from a convenience store.
I usually also take one bottle of water and one OJ.

Mongo!-

Just pull over and have a beer.... If that's too sweet, try Stoli Vanilla and Soda.

You're welcome.

High5 energy bars aren't sweet. Unfortunately they taste like cardboard and probably aren't available in the US.

Have you tried Lara Bars?

I swear by Lara bars, which are a little on the expensive side, but aren't as sweet as Clif or Power bars.

They're made entirely of raw, unprocessed ingredients with no added sweeteners, fillers, preservatives, etc. The ingredients on my favorite flavor, Cherry Pie: dates, almonds, and unsweetened cherries. (That's it.)

If you've got a Whole Foods in your town, they carry Lara bars.

Ha, To each their own I suppose. Gu Gels make me gag. Any other sandwich with the exception of PBJ is to heavy.

Jeez.. I LOVE Cliff bars.
Peanut Butter and the Oatmeal ones are great. I can't do the super sweet stuff, but PB is great.
On group rides with support, I'm happy to find fig bars and bananas.
That, and HEED in the bottle, I'm I'm good for 100 miles.

Fettuccine Alfredo.

Or some salmon.

Neither are sweet.
